HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Statement 1978/02/07 Item 17CITY OF CHULA VISTA COUNCIL AGENDA STATEMENT Item No. 1 ~ For meeting of 2-7-78 ITEM TITLE Resolution q~d.Z.Authorizing the Construction of Temporary Playing Fields for the Chula Vista Miss Softball of America League for the 1978 Season and Appropriating Funds Therefor SUBMITTED BY Director of Parks and Recreation %/ ITEM EXPLANATION (4/5TH'S VOTE REQUIRED YES X NO ) The Parks and Recreation Department has been informed by the Hilltop High School adminis- trative staff that because of major renovation of grounds and irrigations system it would be necessary to close the athletic fields to the various youth leagues presently using these facilities. It was further stated that this renovation would begin March 1, 1978 and extend through August 30, 1978. Staff has been attempting to arrive at some solutions to the immediate problem of providing playing fields for the various youth leagues normally scheduled at Hilltop High School. Contact was made with both the Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista City School District as to the possibility of using undeveloped school sites to overcome the deficiency. In addition, Mayor Hyde and Supervisor Hamilton have discussed the potential creation of fields within the Sweetwater Regional Park; however, since the signup and practice season for the youth leagues has already begun, staff is recommending the instal- lation of temporary backstops on existing sites and the reduction of practice areas, thus freeing existing facilities for game use. This proposal is an immediate solution and staff will continue to pursue the potential of more permanent playing sites.
