Approving Change Orders #1 and 2 for Civic Center Renovation Project SUBMITTED BY Director of Building and Housing T ITEM EXPLANATION (4/5TH'S VOTE REQUIRED YES NO ) CHANGE ~RI1FR N(l 1 The plans call for chain link fencing 8' in height to be erected around the work area. Except for special manufacturing runs, the normal height for chain link fencing is 6'. It was determined that a fence 6' in height would be adequate to prevent persons from entering into the construction site. Change Order #1 was requested and a credit of $1175 was given to the City. CHANGE ORDER N0. 2: During the excavation for foundations, various types of soils were encountered which gave cause for concern as to the soil conditions. We requested Benton Engineering to make 3 test borings and provide us with a soil report. The soil report revealed different types of loose soil, pieces of asphaltic concrete, organic materials and other impedimenta to depths of 11 feet. Soil compaction tests varied from 80% to 88% density. Because of the loads imposed by the new structure connecting the two existing buildings, the structural engineer, John Kariotis, redesigned the foundation. To get the foundation 12" into natural soil, the structural engineer made the decision to excavate and place within the excavation a concrete mi:x called slurry, bringing that up to within 12' of the top of the ground, and construct the footings on the slurry. The engineer chose this method to reduce the cost of shoring deep trenches in accordance with OSHA regulations. 600 lineal feet of foundation had to be revised along with two 7' deep caissons. The original plans for bidding purposes showed the foundations to be at an average depth of 5 feet. Because of the 5' depth shown on the plans, we have a credit of $6,676.95. The total cost of the revised foundation work is $20,937.81. With our credit, the total cost will be $14,260.86. ~XN1~115 Agreement Resolution X Ordinance Plat Notification List Other ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENT: Attached Submitted on FINANCIAL IMPACT -Change Orders #1 and 2 Original contract price $1,983,000 Change Order #1 - deduct 1,175 Amended contract price 1,981,825 Change Order #2 - add 14,260.86 Amended contract price 1,996,085.86 Funds are available for this increase in the 2% contingency account, 635-6350-5569.
