HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Statement 1979/08/21 Item 09CITY OF CHULA VISTA COUNCIL AGENDA STATEMENT Item No. ~ 9 For meeting of 8-21-79 ITEM TITLE RESOLUTION N0. 9,,3,Z AUTHORIZING PURCHASE OF OFFICE FURNITURES FOR PUBLIC SERVICES BUILDING SUBMITTED BY Purchasing Agent ITEM EXPLANATION (4/5TH'S VOTE REQUIRED YES N0~) When Brenda Mason Design Associates prepared specifications for the furniture for the Public Services Building, the Hayworth Moveable Office Systems line was specified. However, the City actually purchased the Steelcase line under a County of San Diego cooperative bid as we could obtain a much better price. When staff examined the specifications prior to purchasing the Steelcase furniture, it became apparent that we would not receive all the necessary furniture for two reasons: 1. Council requested staff to reuse much of the furniture the City already owned and therefore items were eliminated from the specifications. In the Hayworth system, cabinets, bookshelves, desks and panels are all an integral part of the system. The elimination of some new items meant the elimination of other interdependent items as well, even though those items were necessary. 2. When staff made the decision to change from Hayworth to Steelcase, some of the items were not picked up in the change of specification. Staff decided that rather than attempt to rectify all of the discrepancies and short- comings before we moved into the Public Service Building, it would make more sense to wait until the departments had been in the building for a few months to determine what our furniture needs actually were. The items to be purchased at this time are items that were intended to be ordered by the interior designer but were not because of the reusing of furniture or the switch to Steelcase; or are items for which the need has become apparent since our move into the bhilding. The items consist of movable panels, work surfaces, book shelves, file and storage cabinets. The bid will expire on September 12, 1979. The City is still able to purchase the above listed items at a considerable saving and it is recommended that the purchase be approved.
