Yo r community has many plantlingsof mature palm trees which have
co tributed to the beauty of ',lyour city. Yet, you too, are buffeted
by the same anti-palm influeruces that have affected the city of
San Diego and outlying communities.

PARK AND RE4'REATION BOARD POLICY
SUBJECT: PALM TREE PRESER~lATION ANfD PLANTING -
BACKGRO D: In the past large number of palm trees have been planted in San Diego
" on public street rights-~f-way, the grounds of public facilities and
parks, and in private del~elopments. These plantings have contributed
to the semi-tropical image of the City. Currently redevelopment
activity, old age and disease have caused the loss of a significant
number of mature palms. ',This loss does not appear to have been
offset by new palm~plantiings.
PURPOSE The purpose of this poli~,cy is to encourage a balanced landscape, which
includes palm trees, to 'assist in the retention of the City`s semi-
tropical image.
POLICY• It shall be the policy ~f the Park and Pecreation Board to encourage
the retention and plant~.ng of palms as follows: .
~ alm lantings will be retained
]., Street Rights-off-Way: Existing p P
and protected t'p the extent feasible. _
It is recognizejd that trees growing into power lines are
dangerous, and effective remedies must be initiated to correct
the hazardous condition. If a palm tree cannot be trimmed or
the power line',re-routed at a reasonable cost to avoid conflict,
the palm tree ray be removed under City permit which will re-
quire replacement with a suitable palm where feasible.
Due to the maintenance frequency required for palms planted in
the street right-of-way, ne~a plantings of palms as street trees
will be limite~ to low maintenance palm species.
2, public Facilities and Parks; The planti~ga~e a`biiabeerequired
scape which includes palms, where approp
in public faci~.ities and parlcs. The approved design standards
for rlission Bair Park will govern in that facility_
3. Other agenciesl, and the private sector are encouraged to include
palms in their landscaping projects where appropriate_
_ The responsibility fort implementation of this policy is .placed in the
RESPO SI
BILZ Park and Recreation Department.
