In a cordance with the provisions of Sections 302 and 303 of the
Char er of the City of Chula Vista, the City may, by ordinance,
annu lly increase the salaries of Councilmembers and the Mayor
in t e amount of five percent.

DISCVJSSION
Each year in December, the Council is entitled to increase the salaries
of C uncilmembers and the Mayor by the amount of five percent, which
incr ase will take effect in the first pay period in January of the
succ eding year. The five-percent increase as proposed in the ordi-
anc will raise the Councilmembers salary from $471.41 to $494.98
~er onth and the Mayor's salary from $1102.50 to $1157.63 per month.
The ouncil is also entitled to participate in the City's deferred
comp nsation program and members may defer federal and state income
taxe on one-quarter of their salary and if they so choose, the
amou t placed in the deferred compensation plan may be withdrawn
from the program at any time after the member no longer serves on
the ouncil, or said amount may be allowed to remain in the compen-
sati n plan for an indefinite period.
Coun ilmembers are also entitled to belong to the state employees
reti ement system, PE RS, which would entitle them to a small retire-
ment amount, after a minimum of five years of service, at age 55. Any
Coun ilmember who is presently a member of either PE RS or the Cali-
forn a Teachers Retirement System may not participate in PE RS as a
memb r of the City Council.
