RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OE
CHULA VISTA SUPPORTING THE CREATION OF A
CUSTOMS FACILITY IN CATALINA
The City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby
resolve as follows:
WHEREAS, the cruise industry is one of the fastest
growing segments of the leisure industry, and
WHEREAS, this growth is causing numerous cruise lines
now based on the East Coast of the United States to consider West
Coast cruises, and
WHEREAS, many of these lines are considering three and
four day cruises that can be packaged with overnight stays in
Southern California, and
WHEREAS, whenever a cruise ship calls at a port, the
economy of that port is greatly benefitted, and
WHEREAS, there are only a limited number of ports in the
Southern California and Northern Mexico area that are suitable
for cruise ships, and
WHEREAS, Catalina Island is such a port but lacks U. S.
Customs facilities, and
WHEREAS, without Customs facilities, Catalina may
receive only ships that have been previously in a U. S. Port, but
may not receive ships sailing from foreign ports, and
WHEREAS, this condition has resulted in crowding on
weekends in Catalina, and
WHEREAS, this condition has frustrated San Diego in its
efforts to create a San Diego-Ensenada-Los Angeles-Catalina-San
Diego itinerary, and
WHEREAS, this condition threatens to severely limit the
West Coast's growth potential in the short cruise market.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Chula Vista does hereby call for the establishment of
Customs service at Catalina Island.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
distributed to the appropriate officials of the federal
government.
