Item Meeting Date 6/21/88 funds from Imperial expenditure of said funds (4/5ths Vote: Yes X No ) In 1938 the Library Board of Trustees opened a savings account in the name of the Chula Vista Public Library in a local bank. The Library requests Council authorization to close this account which has a balance of $4,055 and expend the funds on an historic photo mural to be displayed in the Library. RECOMMENDATION: That Council adopt this resolution appropriating $4,055 for the photo mural. BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: At their meeting of May 31, 1988, the Library Board of Trustees recommended that these funds be applied to the completion of the Chula Vista Heritage mural and that Sallmon's name be ~itably inscribed. DISCUSSION: In October 1938, William H. Sallmon, a local rancher, donated $1,000 to the Chula Vista Public Library. After the Library Board was unable to find a suitable investment for the $1,000 donation they voted at the December 7, 1938, meeting to deposit the money in a savings account. In ensuing years, this donation was used as an endowment and the interest earned was used to purchase books considered too costly to be bought from the regular book budget. Since the 1977 retirement of City Librarian Bluma Levine, this account has remained inactive and now has over $4,000 in it. The Library proposes that this account be closed and the funds be applied to the installation of a historic photo mural in the lobby of the Library. This photo mural to be called Chula Vista Heritage, will be a collage of photographs from Chula Vista's past in sepia tones applied to the curved wall of the auditorium which extends into the Library foyer from the auditorium door to Conference Room One door. A mural committee, composed of members of the 75th Anniversary Committee, the Library Board, the Friends of the Library, the Chula Vista Historical Society, and interested citizens, has been working on this mural and hopes to have it installed in July. The Friends are currently holding in reserve $2,000 donated toward this purpose by the 75th Anniversary Committee. • _~,; -~. • Page 2, Item 2 2 Meeting Date 6 2 88 The Library would like to add $4,055 from the Imperial Savings account to the mural fund to expedite the completion of this work.
