The State of California has approved the Chula Vista Public
Library's application for grant funds in the amount of $5,000 for
the purchase of library materials for older adults. In order to
receive these funds, Council authorization is needed, recorded by
certified resolution, approving this action.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council adopt the resolution
BOARD/COMMISSIONS RECO1~II~iDATION: On February 24, 1988 the
Library Board of Trustees supported the receipt of Library
Services and Construction Act funds for the purchase of books and
materials for older adults.
DISCUSSION
State Librarian Gary Strong has recognized that with the growing
population of adults over 60 years of age, public library
resources are inadequate to meet both current and future needs of
this population. Therefore, he has made available a fund of up
to $610,000 in Federal Library Services and Construction Act
funds for fiscal year 1987-88 for the purpose of developing
materials collections for older adults.
Since 15.7% of the adult population of Chula Vista is over 60
years old, our community will benefit by accepting this grant.
If accepted, the $5,000 grant will be used for the purchase of
materials for older adults and for materials about aging. Some
of these materials will be books in large print format and audio
visual formats.
FISCAL IMPACT: Accepting this grant will provide $5,000 to the
City's General Fund and this amount will be appropriated to the
Library budget for the purchase of older adult books and
materials.
