Funds for this project were budgeted in FY 1986-87. The work includes the construction of a new fire station at 80 East J Street, installation of vehicle fuel system including underground tanks and pumping capabilities, and demolition of the existing fire station upon completion of the new building. RECOMMENDATION: That Council accept bids and award contract to Ringland- • Johnson-Crowley Co. in the amount of $299,800.00. BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. DISCUSSION: Bids for this project were received from five contractors as follows: Bidder Bid Amount 1. P.ingland-Johnson-Crowley Co. - La Mesa $299,800.00 2. B. J. Fowler Construction - San Diego 335,2.82.00 3. F1. R. Contreras Construction - Bonita 350,000.00 4. Tenicon, Inc. - San Diego 372,944.00 5. Fritz A. Nachant - San Diego* 396,755.00 The cost of the fire station is approximately $85 per square foot. The City of San Diego's bids for their fire stations (San Diego masonry construction vs. Chula Vista's frame and stucco) exceeded $100 per square foot. Based on the number of bids received, we believe this bid to be competitive and recommend awarding the contract to Ringland-Johnson-Crowley Co. We have contacted people for which this firm has done building construction. The responses were excellent regarding the performance of their work. • * The bid by Fritz A. Nachant did not include the proper bid bond and therefore was not be accepted by the City. Page 2, Item 4 • Meeting Date-'f7'~'3785 The City's architect has suggested we have the contractor review the plans and provide the City with possible cost savings through substitution of different construction methods and/or materials. The Contractor, has stated he will do this and if it is found that some savings can be achieved without sacrificing quality of the structure, we will consider such substitutions and modify the contract by a change order.
