Our City Council has a leadership opportunity to take a stand against the epidemic of
childhood obesity. I encourage our City to join the nationwide Let's Move! initiative to
resolve the problem of childhood obesity in our community.
On February 9, 2010, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama launched the
Let's Move! campaign to raise public awareness about the epidemic of childhood
obesity. One out of three American children is now overweight or obese, which places
them at greater risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and cancer over the course of
their lives. Let's Move! Cities & Towns engages municipal leaders, community leaders,
health care practitioners, and families in the campaign to solve the problem of childhood
obesity within a generation. .
Let's Move! encourages elected officials to adopta long-term, sustainable, and holistic
approach to fight childhood obesity. When a city signs up as a prospective Let's Move!
City, there is an option of choosing at least one significant action to take over the
following twelve months in each of the four pillar areas:
.1. Help parents make healthy family choices
2. Create healthy schools
3. Provide access to healthy and affordable food
4. Promote physical activity
Let's Move! Cities & Towns provides a toolkit with creative ideas, recommendations and
ways to get involved. Elected officials can take a stand and be leaders in this effort
across the country. I encourage our City to join this nationwide effort to resolve the
problem of childhood obesity in our community. With everyone working together, this
problem can be solved. Thank you,
