ITEM TITLE: Resolution~~~ 7 Accepting bids and awarding contract
for traffic signal installation at the intersections of
Hilltop Drive/Quintard Street nd Orange Avenue/Second Avenue
in the City of Chula Vista, CA
SUBMITTED BY: Director of Public Works
REVIEWED BY: City Manager ~~ (4/5ths Vote: Yes No X )
~.
At 2:00 p.m. on November 4, 1987, in Conference Room 2 in the Public Services
Building, the City Engineer received sealed bids for traffic signal
installation at Hilltop Drive/Quintard Street and Orange Avenue/Second Avenue
in the City of Chula Vista.
Bids were received from four (4) qualified electrical contractors to install
the two traffic signals. The improvements at both intersections were funded
in the 1986-87 CIP.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council accept the bids and award the contract to
Steiny and Company in the amount of $74,945,
• BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
In the past, electrical contractors have indicated to staff that they are able
to do two or three traffic signal installations more economically than a
single project With this in mind, these two budgeted CIP projects, being
located in the same general area of the City, were advertised by staff as one
lump sum contract in hopes of receiving better bids.
Bids were received from four qualified contractors as follows:
1. Steiny and Company - San Diego $74,945
2. M.C.R. Electric - Imperial Beach 78,039
3. D & H Perry - Spring Valley 79,350
4. DBX - Spring Valley 81,750
The low bid by Steiny and Company was below the Engineer's estimate of $80,200
by $5,255 or 6.55. We have reviewed the low bid and believe it to be
satisfactory and recommend awarding the contract to Steiny and Company.
