Our Chula Vista Senior Citizens' Club has been serving Chula Vista seniors for 50 years. CurrenVy, the
Norman Park Center serves close to 2500 senior residents EVERY WEEK. It would be tantamount to a
travesty to close Norman Park Senior Centrer, as we've been told is being proposed in all three of the budget-
cutting proposals about to be considered by your Council.
If you do this, and you close the Center on Jan 7th, you would be closing the doors and support services to

closing the doors on close to 100 on-going in-house programs, community-sponsored wOrkshop and activities

tax payers and voters, too, and each of us (aged 50 to 95) have had a little bit more life experiences than any

RE:
Our Chula Vista Senior Citizens' Club has been serving Chula Vista seniors for 50 years.
Currently, the Norman Park Center serves close to 2500 senior residents EVER Y WEEK.
It would be tantamount to a travesty to close Norman Park Senior Center, as \\C'VC been
told is being proposed in all three of the budget cutting proposals about to bc consiuered
by your Council.
If you do this, and you close the Center on Jan 7'h, you would be closing the doors and
support services to' over 2500 senior residents who consider Norman Park their center
each and every week. You would be closing the doors on close to 100 on-going in-house
programs, community-sponsored workshops anu activities and daily, weeklv and tlltlnlhh
. .
"helping" services as well as the fun anu sharing activities we all look forward to
Please remember that senior citizens in Chula Vista account for approximately 18% of
our population. We are tax payers and voters, too, and each of us (aged 50 to 95) have

The members of "World Affairs Discussion Group" are opposed to the
possibility of Norman Park Center being closed due to so-called "Budget
Cuts."
Our group has been meeting at NormalJ Park Center since its opening (I
believe we were the FIRST group to meet here).
We welcome all ages and ethnic backgrounds and have no fees and no
personal agenda.. We discuss International, National and Local Current
Events. We also occasionally have prominent f:,'1lest speakers. Our
attendance varies between 18 and 24 every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to
noon.
Please consider the well-being of the Seniors in this area. Remember, we
also vote.
Sincerely,

Chula Vista City Council
Dear Mayor Cox & Council Members,
I have just learned that there is a possibility that the Norman Park Senior Center may be
closing or turned over to a Non-Profit organization. While I realize that non-profits are
worthwhile and beneficial to our communities the Center, because of it's ownership by the city of
Chula Vista has enjoyed a special relationship to its citizens. It is their center.
The employees and volunteers have, for the most part, remained steadfast through many years,
all becoming part of the Norman Park family.
I myself worked upstairs for over 10 years and knew the city employees, volunteers, all of the
people who worked on the second floor. There was a closeness and comradery that came from
knowing and liking each other. We shared so much, personal history, happiness, sometimes
sadness, altogether it made coming to work something that you looked forward to. If you needed
an answer to a question or a solution to a problem there was always someone who knew the
answer, and was always willing to help.
The services that the Center has provided over the years I could not even begin to chronicle. The
help that has been provided to the people ofChula Vista, from minor instances to major
problems is immeasurable.
When the unfortunate incident happened at the Congregational Towers a few years ago the
police and firemen automatically sent people on F street to the Center, we saw one fireman carry
an elderly woman in, she was cared for by staff members and volunteers until she felt better.
The potluck lunches, the movies, the meetings, etc. there are too many memories, the Center is
and always will be, a special place to me and I hope with all my heart that it will remain part of
our city for a long time to come, a place that is as much a part of the city of Chula Vista as is
every other thing that is dear to all of us that live here.
Thank you for your time,
October 2,2010

senior force who are served every wee!1>y NORMAN PARK SENIOR CENTER,
ARE ADAMENTL Y OPPOSED TO THE CENTER'S CLOSING AND ASK FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO FIND
OUR OWN WAYS TO MAKE IT MORE COST EFFECTIVE.
DATE
October 4, 2010
Dear Madame Mayor and Council Members
It has come to our attention that on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, you will begin consderation of three different
proposals for balancing the City Budget.
While it was made clear to us that your acceptance of any of the three "balancing" poposals is dependent on
the results of three other income "balancers", including the passage of Proposition H, we were agast to hear
that NORMAN PARK is on the cutting table in each of the three proposals. Does that mean that NORMAN
PARK will be closino even if Propostion H passes????
If this happens, and we've heard it may occur as soon as Jan 7th, you would be closing the doors and support
services to over 2500 senior residents EACH WEEK who consider NORMAN PARK their Center. You would
be closing the doors on close to 100 on-going in-house programs; community sponsored workshops and
activities; daily, weekly and monthly "helping" services as well as to the fun and sharing activities we all look
forward to to keep us young and healthy and independent and vital as we are.
Please remember that senior citizens, aged 50 and over, represent 18% of Chula Vista's residents. We are
tax payers and voters, too. We're already investigating ways to make a difference in the important election
coming up in November. But. before anv of us can decide how to vote. we need to hear from vou that the Citv
Council will oive us this ensuino time -- and UP to December 1st. to poll the Center's 2500 members and
visitors in order to come UP with our own better suoooestions for makino our Center more cost effective.
WE THINK THERE ARE MANY MORE WAYS FOR OUR CENTER TO BECOME COST EFFECTIVE
BESIDES CLOSING IT DOWN. WE ASK FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CONTACT THESE INTERESTED
PARTIES AND, THEN, PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME OF THEIR IMPORTANT INPUT BEFORE YOU MAKE
ANY FINAL DECISION REGARDING NORMAN PARK.
We thank you ahead of time for your swift attention and immediate response to our request.
Sincerely, c..,//

PETITION TO KEEP THE NORMAN PARKS SENIOR CENTER OPEN FOR OUR SENIORS
Friday October is'' 2010, We (the seniors of Chula Vista) were informed of a "Special
Meeting" at the Library concerning the closing of our beloved Norman Parks Senior
Community Center.
That is not even a full three days notice and for seniors that is not a very long time.
We, who have discovered the fellowship and joy available to us in our community
center, find this to be appalling and disheartening. How can the big beautiful City of
Chula Vista even consider doing such a thing? This is very disturbing to the seniors
who enjoy our special meeting place.
We need a place to meet and the interaction of others is very important to our general
health and mental health.
We who sign this petition would ask that you please let us enjoy the Senior Center for
many years to come. Not to mention the many members who didn't even get the
notice of the proposed closing or the scheduled meeting.
