COUNCIL AGENDA STATEMENT
Item 4
Meeting Date 09/28/88
1M TITLE:
RESOLUTION - PROVIDING FOR THE SPECIAL APPROPRIATION
OF FUNDS FOR THE NOVEMBER 8, 1988
PRESIDENTIAL GENERAL ELECTION
SUBMITTED BV: City Cler~ (4/5ths Vote: Ves x No
Eight (8) City Propositions have been placed on the November 8, 1988
Consolidated Presidential General Election. In accordance with the
policy of the Board of Supervisors, the estimated cost of the City's
share of the election must be paid in advance - in this case, our
estimated cost is $16,374.00.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Resolution appropriating the sum
of $12,000.00 for the estimated additional
cost of the November 8, 1988 Election.
DISCUSSION: Prior to an election, the Registrar of Voters sends
out an invoice to all cities having items on the ballot "estimating"
the cost of the election. This sum must be paid in advance of the
election date. It covers all administrative and printing costs
led on the number of registered voters in the City and the number
items on the ba 11 ot. Chul a Vi sta now ha s 57,253 regi stered
ers.
The sum of $6,000.00 was budgeted for election costs for FY
1988/89. This was purely an estimate based on the minimal number of
propositions to be placed on the ballot; however, we ended up with
eight (8) propositions one of which is the Initiative which
requires printing the entire text in the sample ballot.
;
FISCAL IMPACT: Appropriate the sum of $12,000.00 from the
unappropriated balance of the General Fund to Account 100-0170-5202
(Elections Other Specialized Services). There will remain a
balance of $1,626.00 which will be used to pay any additional costs
based on the final invoice from the Registrar of Voters (sometime in
January 1989). If the estimated cost is lower than the final, we
will receive a refund from the Registrar of Voters.
