Item 7 Meeting Date 8/16/88 Resolution /3A3 r Authorizing the Mayor to execute a contract for a symphony concert, a fi reworks di spl ay, and to enter into an indemnification agreement ~ SUBMITTED BY: Director of Parks and Recreation REVIEWED BY: City Manage~ The City, in conjunction with the San Diego Unified Port District, is planning to host the San Di ego Symphony Pops Orchestra for a concert at Mari na Vi ew Park on Sunday, August 28, 1988. ITEM TITLE: (4/5ths Vote: Yes No X ) -- RECOMMENDATION: That Council adopt the resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute a contract wi th the San Di ego Symphony, a contract wi th San Di ego Fireworks, and to enter into an indemnification agreement with Rohr Industries for the use of their parking facilities. BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable. DISCUSSION: . The City is planning to host a Pops concert at Marina View Park on August 28, 1988. The San Diego Symphony will perform on an outdoor stage located just south of the convergence of IIJII Street and Tidelands Avenue on the large grass area of the park. There are two fundi ng sources for thi s event. The San Diego Unified Port District has budgeted $17,500 to defray the actual contract cost of the symphony and an additional $10,050 was allocated in the City 's non-departmental budget to offset the costs of supplies and services, including the fireworks finale. A breakdown of these additional costs is attached, along wi th a map of the concert site. The concert is schedul ed to begin at 7:00 p.m. with the symphony performing American popular music from the 20's, 30's, and 40's. San Diego Fireworks will provide a fireworks display to accompany the symphony's musical finale. Public parking will be available in the area, and free shuttle bus service will be offered between the concert site and the IIHII Street trolley stations. Traffic and crowd control will be handled by regular duty police officers and police reserve personnel. Promotions and advertising will be coordinated through the City's Public Information office. The symphony will provide the stage, orchestra shell, and all sound and lighting equipment necessary. The performance of the Pops orchestra wi 11 greatly enri ch the cul tural and artistic opportunities for Chula Vista residents, and the event will help to enhance the City's image as a community that nurtures cultural programs. .
