BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
San Diego Gas & Electric is planning to convert the street lights owned by the utility
(1,063 175W and 110 400W mercury vapor) to high pressure sodium vapor. This conversion
will reduce the cost to the City for energy in accordance with the following table:
Lumens
Energy Cost/month (as of July 1980)
$11 .67
8.98
20.25
17.10
175 W mercury (existing)
100 W sodium (proposed)
400 W mercury (existing)
250 W sodium (proposed)
7,000
9,500
20,000
30,000
Estimated cost savings/mo. = $3,206
The existing schedule calls for the utility to begin conversion in the Fall and be
complete by Spring 1981. In addition to reducing energy costs, this conversion will
provide more illumination on the street.
The City is in the final phase of converting some 350 400W mercury vapor city owned
street lights to high pressure sodium vapor. This conversion is also expected to be
complete in Spring 1981.
Attached is a copy of the agreement for Council information.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The conversion to high pressure sodium vapor will not cost the City any money, provided
the street lights remain in place for 5 years from October 1, 1980. Should the City
desire to remove any existing utility owned street lights prior to October 1985, the
cost of installation and removal (est. $50 each) must be repaid during the first year
and a prorated portion paid thereafter. This repayment does not apply to any utility
owned street lights that may be removed as a result of utility undergrounding.
Estimated annual savings after conversion is $38,000.
