Bids were received and opened at 10:00 A.M. on June 6, 1980 in the office of the
Purchasing Agent for furnishing aggregate base and sand to the City for the period
July 1, 1980 through June 30, 1981. An estimated 3,000 tons of aggregate base and
1,000 tons of sand will be picked up at the vendor's plant by City trucks.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council
Accept the bids and award the contract to Nelson & Sloan.

DISCUSSION:
Six vendors were mailed bid documents. Three vendors responded as follows:

Nelson & Sloan, Chula Vista, submitted the low bid on aggregate base. Woodward Sand,
Lakeside, was low bidder on the sand. Distance round trip to Woodward Sand is 63 miles,
compared to 8 miles to Nelson & Sloan. A normal truck load is 7 tons of material.
Truck rate is $6.00 per hour and driver $6.84 for a total of $12.84 per hour. Round trip
travel to Woodward Sand is 2\ hours compared to 45 minutes to Nelson & Sloan.
Considering these costs, a 7 ton load picked up at Woodward Sand will cost $54.50
compared to $44.28 at ,Nelson & Sloan. Therefore, it is more economical to pick up sand
at Nelson & Sloan.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Purchases to be made only on availability of funds as certified'by the Finance Director.
