[ 27 ] CHULA VISTA CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF: August 13, 1974 INITIATED BY: ITEM TITLE: RESOLUTION - Approving Agreement Between the El Camino District Bottle Collection Committee and Troop 874 of the Boy Scouts of America and the City of Chula Vista for the Operation of Glass Recycling Center. City Manager BACKGROUND In late March 1973, the Chula Vista Junior Wbmens. Club, supported by the Environmental Control Commission, approached the City regarding the establishment of a glass reclamation center. Staff investigated the project and found it to:lbe feasible and worthwhi 1 e. Briefly, the Chula Vista Junior Womensl Club contracted with the Chula Vista Sanitary Service for two metal bins, which would be placed on City land adjacent to the Animal Shelter. The operation has been cleared with the Coastal Regional Commission and meets the security and liability conditions of the City. No cost would be incurred by the City under the terms of the agreement. On May 30, 1974, the Chula Vista Junior Womensl Club contacted staff and indicated their unwillingness to continue the project. Their reasons for the discontinuation of this effort was a lack of club participants and outside assistance. At this time, the Womens Club requested the City find another sponsor for the glass center since it was their opinion it is a worthwhile effort and should not be abandoned. After contacting many organizations and service groups, staff met with the El Camino District of the Boy Scouts of America and they indicated a willingness to sponsor the glass center operation. The Chula Vista Wornens' Club has terminated the operation of the glass center on August 7, 1974, and the Boy Scouts will hopefully begin operation on August 14, 1974, for an initial gO-day period. There is every indication from the Boy Scouts that if the operation proves successful they will continue the glass center indefinately.
