LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
FEBRUARY 22, 1989

The meeting was called to order at 2:04 p.m.
A revised agenda was mailed and additional copies were
distributed at the meeting. However, there being no quorum, no
action was taken on any agenda item. Brief discussions were held
on the following:

Chairman McBreen reported on the CALTAC workshop on
evaluating library services through the use of ALA's output
measures. He asked that this topic be placed on the agenda
of the Board's March 22, 1989 meeting.
Chairman McBreen asked that a letter be prepared on behalf
of the Board, congratulating Circulation supervisor, Joyce
Jantz, on her retirement after 26 years of employment with
the city of Chula vista.
Library Director Lane reported on the Library
Trustee's workshop, held on February 7, 1989, to
priorities on previously selected library sites.

Board members and staff expressed regrets at Trustee
Hegland's passing. Trustee Lindsay requested that copies of
memorial books be brought to the March 22nd meeting so that
a similar proposal might be made to the Hegland family.
Director Lane announced that the Library owned two copies of
Satanic Verses.

Trustee Lindsay and Director Lane reported on the memorial
service for Sheridan Hegland.
Betty Roche, of the Friends of the Library, announced that
the Friends Book Store would be open on Sundays from 1-3
p.m. beginning March 5, 1989.
Director Lane announced that Legislative Day will be May 10,
1989.

Chairman McBreen presented an article concerning New Jersey
library grants to senior citizens. Director Lane reported
that last year the Library had received the same LSCA grant
of $5,000 which was used to purchase large print books, plus
books and videos dealing with issues related to aging.
Chairman McBreen offered a videotape recording of a recent
PBS program on the destruction of library materials through
the use of acidic paper called "SLOW FIRES". He asked that
this issue be placed on the March 22nd agenda so that the
Board might consider .aking a formal statement urging
publishers to use alkaline rather than acidic paper.
All agenda items under "Continued Matters" were continued to
the March 22, 1989 meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m. The next scheduled
meeting of the Library Board will be on March 22, 1989.
