Resolution /J~;r~Accepting bids and awarding contract for
construction of street lights on Bonita Road

The installation of City owned street lights has been approved in the FY80-81 CIP
(GT-ll~). This project is being done in conjunction with the utility undergrounding
on Bonita Road between Otay lakes Road and Wi 11 ow Street. Ther:efore it is my

RECOMMENDATION: That Council award this contract to Select Electric, the low
bidder, for $14,615.
BOARD/COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: Not applicable.
DISCUSSION:
The City Engineer opened bids for the construction of street lights on Bonita Road
at 10:00 a.m. on November 12, 1980. Results of the bids received are as follows:

Perry Electric, Spring Valley

Steiny & Co., San Diego

The low bi dder, Sel ect Electri c submitted a bi d for $14,615.00 whi ch is 58%
less than the engineer's estimate. It is assumed that this low bid which has
unit prices significantly less than comparable projects awarded in the past year
is based on the following:
1. Seven ,bids were received. Usually we get only three bids on this
type of project. The extra interest in this project indicates that
there are many contractors "hungry" for wor.k and this results in
lower than normal construction prices.
2. To expedite this project, the City has ordered the street lights and
poles whereas the contractor usually provides these materials.
This has created less paperwork and adminstrative duties for the
contractor.

This project is expected to be completed by February 1, 1981 to coincide with the
removal of the existing overhead wires and utility owned street lights on Bonita Road.
