ORDINANCE NO. 2035
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA DECLARING
THAT THE POSITION OF PUBLIC INFORMATION COORDINATOR
SHALL BE AN UNCLASSIFIED POSITION
The City Council of the City of Chula Vista does ordain
as follows:
WHEREAS, Section 500 of the City Charter provides that
the City Council may by a four-fifths vote determine that a
position of management level employees may be placed in the
Unclassified Service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of
the City of Chula Vista that the position of Public Information
Coordinator shall be placed in the Unclassified Service.

PUBLIC INFORMATION SPECIALIST
Definition
Under general supervision of the Management Services Director, to co-
ordinate the public information efforts of City staff and carry out a pub-
lic information program.
*Examples of Typical Duties
Coordinates the production and transmittal of press releases and infor-
mation through electronic and print media to Chula Vista residents, San Diego
County residents, and others; coordinates local public functions and informa-
tional meetings; promotes City programs; develops and coordinates a news bureau;
coordinates displays in Civic Center buildings; develops and maintains speakers
bureau; maintains an events calendar; arranges staff training in public infor-
mation.
Probably will assist in business and industrial promotion; coordinate with
an outside professional public relations firm; supervise student interns; per-
form ombudsman functions for City Manager's office; conduct surveys regarding
City services; help develop local cablecasting program.
**Desirable Qualifications
Training and Experience - Any combination of education, training or ex-
perience that would have allowed a person to gain experience in the typical
tasks of the job. At least two year's of work in the public information sup-
plemented by college-level course work in journalism and public relations area
would be desirable.
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities - Knowledge of: media functions;
methods of planning and implementing an effective public information program;
principles of planning and preparing media releases, news conferences, and
other public information techniques. Ability to: effectively communicate
orally and in writing with City staff and officials, news media, the public,
and all other persons interested in information on Chula Vista; evaluate pub-
lic attitudes toward City operations; train staff members in public informa-
tion goals and method; supervise interns to assist in the public information
program.
Licenses - Valid Californai Drivers License at time of appointment.
