RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA
VISTA ACCEPTING $212,875 IN GRANT FUNDS FROM THE
CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY & FIRE PROTECTION
TO PLANT 1,275 SHADE TREES ALONG PUBLIC RIGHTS-OF-
WAY, ESTABLISHING A NEW CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT
PROJECT (CIP) ENTITLED "CDFF URBAN SHADE TREE GRANT
(OP-213)", AMENDING THE FISCAL YEAR 2006/2007 CAPITAL
IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM, AND APPROPRIATING $212,875 IN
GRANT FUNDS
WHEREAS, trees can enhance the quality oflife for City ofChula Vista (City)
residents by improving local air and water quality, creating wildlife habitat, providing shade
that reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect, and beautifying City streets; and
WHEREAS, trees are an important tool for reducing energy consumption as
highlighted in the City's Carbon Dioxide (C02) Reduction Plan and its 2006 General Plan
Update; and
WHEREAS, on November 7, 2006, pursuant to Resolution 2006-330, the City
Council approved the submittal of an application to the State of California for a Proposition
12 grant for funds to plant 1,275 shade trees on public rights-of-way pursuant to the
Department of Forestry & Fire Protection's "Green Trees for the Golden State" program; and
WHEREAS, the City was awarded $212,875 in grant funds to carry out the proposed
shade tree plantings; and
WHEREAS, the Director of the Department of Conservation & Environmental
Services has executed the Department of Forestry & Fire Protection Urban Forestry Grant
Agreement for the "Green Trees for the Golden State" program pursuant to the authority
granted in Resolution 2006-330.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Chula
Vista as follows:
1. That it accepts $212,875 in grant funds from the California Department of Forestry &
Fire Protection to plant 1,275 shade trees along City public rights-of-way.
2. That it establishes a new Capital Improvement Project (CIP) entitled "CDFF Urban
Shade Tree Grant (OP-213)".
3. That it amends the Fiscal Year 2006/2007 Capital Improvement Program and
appropriates $212,875 in grant funds to CDFF Urban Shade Tree Grant (OP-213).
