If we follow the normal fiscal year purchasing schedule, these vehicles will not be delivered until the spring of 1992. The mileage of these eleven vehicles will range from 121,000 to 132,000 by April, 1992, which is significantly greater than the policy of replacing patrol vehicles at 80,000 miles. We have an opportunity to use the existing state CHP bid to purchase Ford Crown victorias from Downtown Ford in Sacramento at the current state price. When the current inventory is gone, the state bid expires. purchasing the vehicles now would eliminate the problems associated with waiting for the 1992 vehicles. It would also mean that almost all vehicles in the patrol fleet would be Crown Victorias, a vehicle the Police Department has found to be very satisfactory. Having the same vehicle for most of the fleet should be advantageous for repair and maintenance. with approval of this resolution, the replacement of the eleven police patrol vehicles will be removed from the 1991-92 replacement authorization request. RECOMMENDATION: That Council approve the appropriation of $192,500 from the Equipment Replacement Fund to purchase eleven police patrol vehicles. FISCAL IMPACT: There are sufficient funds in the unappropriated balance in the Equipment Replacement Fund for this appropriation.
