HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 1974-7214 RESOLUTION NO. 7214 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA APPROVING CENTER ISLAND MEDIAN LANDSCAPING POLICY The City Council of the City of Chula vista does hereby resolve as follows: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Chula vista hereby adopts the following Center Island Median Landscaping Policy: CENTER ISALND MEDIAN LANDSCAPE POLICY A. Center island medians shall be installed on major roads only (100 foot right-of-way), as shown on Standard Drawing 101-A, Typical Street Sections. These islands shall be landscaped in accordance with this policy. B. The center island landscaping design shall be based upon: 1. Appearance 2. Maintenance costs 3. Installation costs 4. The surrounding environment 5. Hardiness - the ability of the plants to survive C. The characteristic island design shall provide for both architectural forms and planting areas. Islands shall be individually designed so as to enhance the surrounding street scene in the best possible way. In accomplishing this, center islands should conform to the following cri- teria: 1. Planting a. Trees shall be limited to those in the City street tree master plan. b. Ground cover shall be limited generally to woody shrub varieties with low growing disease re- sistant and automobile resistant characteristics. c. Plants used should have a proven tolerance for blade grass herbicides. d. Plants which require excessive labor for re- moval of unsightly seeds or stalks shall be avoided. e. A heavy course of raw wood chips shall be used in all planters for natural weed control. f. Lawn medians will be considered for use in heavy commercial areas. 2. Irrigation a. Only automatic surface flooding systems uti- lizing "spider" type bubbler heads will normally be used. b. Vegetation shall be washed at maximum intervals of 6 weeks between April 1st and October 30. Enough water should be applied to also rinse all decorative paving if applicable. - 1 - 3. Architectural Features a. Architectural features shall be used on minimum 14' wide islands only. b. Materials for paving shall be limited to fixed brick or tiles, natural color concrete or stamped concrete. Small separate planters shall be avoided. c. No synthetic plants, colored rocks, or painted surfaces shall be installed. d. Natural rock arrangements shall have max- imum heights consistent with good safety practice for streets.
