OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA
Held Friday June 18, 1976
An adjourned regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Chula Vista, California,
was called on the above date beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the Council Conference Room, 276
Fourth Avenue, with the following
Councilmen present: Councilmen Hyde, Egdahl, Cox
Councilmen absent: Mayor Hamilton, Councilman Hobel
Staff present: Acting City Manager Asmus, City Attorney Lindberg, Director of Finance
Grant
Others present: Mr. Charles Shippey, Creaser & Price Insurance Agency
Mayor Pro Tempore Hyde opened the meeting at 4:45 p.m. (when a quorum was established) to
discuss renewal of the City's liability insurance.
PRESENT COVERAGE Mr. Charles Shippey referred to the motion made at
the June 17 meeting - to ask the present insurance
carrier, Harbor Insurance Company, for a 30-day
extension on the liability insurance. Mr. Shippey
informed the Council that Harbor would not grant
this extension, and therefore, the present insur-
ance expires at midnight (June 18).
Alternate proposal Mr. Shippey discussed the proposals submitted by
Harbor and Admiral Insurance Companies, the deduct-
ibles, and the cost of coverages.
Council discussion The Council discussed the amount of claims received
by the City and paid in the last few years, the
cost of the premiums, Risk Management recommendations,
and joining with the City of San Diego in an insur-
ance program.
Mr. Shippey recommended the proposal to use R. L.
Kautz Company (same company that handles the Work-
man's Compensation claims) to manage claims and buy
insurance subject to a $S0,000 deductible with a
top limit of $10 million. This program would run
approximately $160,000 a year (including Kautz'
service of $6,000).
Motion to approve the It was moved by Councilman Egdahl, seconded by
$S0,000 deductible insurance Councilman Cox and unanimously carried by those
present that approval be given to going with the
$50,000 deductible and the $154,000 premium and
establish a $S0,000 reserve (as recommended by
Mr. Shippey).
Mr. Shippey explained that the deductible would be
$S0,000 per occurrence with a $150,000 annual
aggregate.
LIBP~kRY BROCHURE Acting City Manager Asmus asked for the Council's
feelings regarding the publication of a brochure
for the Library. The Library staff has been work-
ing on one; however, the time and cost involved
prohibit its publication prior to the July 4 ded-
ication ceremony.
The Council discussed the fact that the STAR-NEWS
would probably be printing a tableau on the opening;
the time element involved; a brochure can be pre-
pared after the opening; the architects and interior

designers will be compiling data and pictures, and
the library staff can work with these people and
publish a brochure at a later time.

5:05 p.m.
