HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 1983-11385 RESOLUTION NO. 11385 ~ RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA WITH RESPECT TO THE DESTRUCTION OF A CIVILIAN AIRLINER BY THE USSR The City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby resolve as follows: WHEREAS, the entire world depends on mutual trust among nations in the conduct of civilian affairs, and WHEREAS, civilian airline passengers are particularly vulnerable to uncivilized terrorist actions by any group or renegade nation, and WHEREAS, on August 31st a Korean civilian airliner with 269 passengers aboard was destroyed by the Soviet Union. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby express its outrage at this uncivilized and inhumane action by the government of the Soviet Union. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council expresses its sympathy to the families of the victims of this assault on humanity. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we the government of the City of Chula Vista express our support and the support of the people of our city to our national government, the President and the Congress as they represent our individual and national interest in this tragic situation. Many mayors and cities have already expressed their sense of outrage toward the shoot- ing down of the airliner, sympathy for the families of the victims and their support of our national government with respect to this incident. I have talked with appropriate officials in our national government and we concur with them that resolutions from city councils or statements by mayors would clearly reflect the broad base of support our national government enjoys in this particular instance. ~.
