HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2005-437 RESOLUTION NO. 2005-437 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA SUPPORTING THE CONCEPT OF THE JESSICA'S LAW INITIATIVE WHEREAS, in order to reduce the potential risk of harm to our community from sex offenders and to further protect our children from these dangerous sexual predators; and WHEREAS, California currently has 63,000 registered sex offenders yet the whereabouts of one in every four sex offenders are currently unknown; and WHEREAS, Jessica's Law would expand the designation of predators as "sexually violent" after one offense, would create predator-free zones near schools and parks, and gives the courts the ability to monitor sex offenders electronically with GPS tracking; and WHEREAS, if placed on the ballot and supported by voters, Jessica's Law would increase both sentences and fines, and eliminate the use of "good time" credits for reduced prison terms of sex offenders; and WHEREAS, Jessica's Law is endorsed by the California District Attorneys Association, the California State Sheriffs' Association and the County of San Diego. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Chula Vista supports the concept of Jessica's Law to help prevent predators living among us from destroying innocent and precious lives.
