Coordinator: Our Coordinator, Garben " Van" Putten acts as secretary for the Association keeping minutes and attending the meetings. He visits the various places of business, distributing newsletters, flyers, posters, and other materials. He also attends various grand openings and .. mixers II in the area. We subscribe to membership in the California Downtown Assocation, and send Niek Slijk to several meetings each year. These contacts have proven to be a rich source of promotional ideas and keeps us in touch with the activities of the other California city promotion directors. We spend a considerable amount of our budget on newsletters and radio advertising; in this way we keep the people of the South Bay area aware of our presence, and of our activities in the Downtown area. The Committee is aware of the new shopping areas being developed and sense the need for our own advertising program. The Downtown Committee sponsored three major promotions this past year; The Country Festival was held in July; The Chula Vista Founders Day and Oktober- fest held in October; This is the first year the Committee has worked with the Chula Vista Jaycees planning the Fiesta de Luna Parade during the morning hours and the Founder's Day festivities in the afternoon and evening hours. Together these combined activities drew many thousands of people to the Third Avenue area. The annual Starlight Yule Parade opening the Christmas season- held the first Monday after Thanksgiving. In addition to these major events we work closely with the Business Salutes Chula Vista Day In May, also promoting special days for various holidays. Many thousands of people have made a special trip to Chula Vista, attracted by these events. A COMMITTEE OF THE CHULA VISTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 233 FOURTH AVENUE . CHI II ,\ VISTA. l'ALlFORNIA 4,OW . These decorations have drawn favor- able comments from many shoppers and visitors that come to our Downtown area. People are beginning to add the Downtown area to the II must-see " decorations along with the Candy Cane Lane and Mankato-Whitney displays. Anticipating the " New Look " of the Downtown Chula Vista with the completion of the Village Plaza area. The Downtown Committee is preparing an attractive brochure portraying our ever beautiful trading area. This brochure would be placed in motels, restaurants, information centers, and other strategic spots wherever visitors and tourists would gather. The merchants and others are happy with our efforts and we have drawn larger crowds to the Downtown area. We are continually inviting people to participate in our meetings which are held weekly in order to improve communications with the Downtown Improvement District participants. sincerely, -, jj' / '" /' 1 Cu/. j~- - -- Dick Gilmore, Chairman Downtown Committee of Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce DG/bh cc: Finance Department f(-I/ y,,~
