THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL

Dear Mayor and City Council:
In carrying out the purpose of the Downtown Committee of the Chula Vista
Chamber of Commerce, the following items and activities in which we have
been involved:
Newsletters and flyers: Monthly newslett'ers and special interest flyers,
are printed and distributed to each of the members of the Downtown
Committee.
Coordinator: Our Coordinator, Gerben ItVan" Putten acts as secretary for
the Association keeping minutes and attending the meetings. He visits the
various places of business, distributing newsletters, flyers, posters, and
other materials. He also attends various grand openings and Mixers in the
area.
We subscribe to membership in the California Downtown Association and send
Niek Slijk to several meetings each year. These contacts have proven to
be a rich source of promotional ideas and keeps us in touch with the acti-
vities of the other California city promotion directors.
We spend a considerable amount of our budget on newsletters and radio
advertising; in this way we keep 'the people of the South Bay area aware of
our presence and of our activities in the Downtown area. The Committee is
aware of the new shopping areas being developed and sense the need for our
own advertising program.

The Downtown Committee sponsored four major events this past year, the Arts
and Crafts Fair was held in May with many people coming downtown with dis-
plays. The Country Festival was held in July, the day ending with many
people enjoying the Country Music program in the Memorial Park Bowl. The
Founders Day Celebration was held in October. This is the second year the
Committee has worked with the Chula Vista Jaycees planning the Fiesta de
la Luna Parade in the morning hours and the Founders Day festivities in

the afternoon and evening hours. The Annual Starlight Yule Parade, opening
the Christmas season, was held on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.
Together these combined activities drew thousands of people to our Downtown
area, many of them perhaps for the first time. In addition to these events
we work closely with the Business Salutes Chula Vista day in May. Through-
out the year we promote special sales events, usually around holidays. We
have received good cooperation from the business and professional people of
the area. The International Salsa Festival was held on Third Avenue in
August. This event is sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, however,
our Committee worked closely with them and felt it was a very worthwhile
effort encouraging us to give even more time towards this years event.
Each Fall the Committee adds to an already impressive display of Christmas
decorations to be placed on the streets. These decorations have drawn
favorable comments from many shoppers and visitors that come to our Downtown
area. People are beginning to add the Downtown area to the "must-see"
decorations along with the Candy Cane Lane and Mankato-Whitney displays.
The merchants and others are happy with our efforts and we have drawn larger
crowds to the Downtown area. We are continually inviting people to partici-
pate in our meetings which are held weekly in order to improve communications
with the Downtown Improvement District participants.
Sincerely, ,
I' .
