The testn WerE! n~rformed in accordance with the specifications set fort.h in AS~M E-84-89a, "standard Test Method for Surface BUrning Characteristics of Building Materials", both as to f'Hluiprnent (1ncJ t(-~:.:;t pr·ocedure. Thi~ test procedure is simìlar t,() UL-723, ANSI No. 2.5, NFPA NO. 255 and UBC 42-1. Inorganic cement board and red oak flooring are used as comparative standards and their responses arm assigned arbitrary values of o and 100, respectively. ~R~:M,MT¡9ILMJ)._Ç.9lm..¡T¡ONING : Three (3 ) 24" x 8'011 sections of material were fitted end to end to form a 24" x 24'0" specimen. The specimen was laid on a 2-inch galvanized hexagonal wire mesh supported by steel rods spanning ~h0 width of the tunnel. The ~ample was conditioned at 73" + 5° Fahrenheit and 50 ± 5% rQlative humidity. TEST PROC.f.&llRF: I The tunnel was thoroughly pre-heated by burning natural gas. When the bricy- temperature, ",ensed by a floor thermocouple, had reached the prescribed 105" Fahrenheit :0 5" Fahl:"enheit. level, the ..amp1 e was ins€'rted .in the tunnel and test conducted in accordance with ttle standard ASTM E-84-89a procedures. The operalion of the tunnel was checked by performing a 10-minute tefd: wit,]) inorganic board on the day of t,he test. Also observed were flaming drippings and floor burning as the flame front advanced the complete length of the specimen at 3 minutes, 42 seconds. ~fterglow was evident upon test completion.
