The action of the Counci 1 was to allow construction of a no higher than 40-foot pole sign with approximately 100 square feet of copy on the property of Days Inn for a period of three years. The motion passed with Councilman Malcolm voting "no". Counc i lman Moore commented that he has revi ewed hi s action (of June 17 and July 15) on the proposed sign and feels that the whole bayfront picture must be taken into consi derat i on - if Days Inn fail s, wi 11 the City be able to attract aqua 1 i ty tenant or a large hotel for Gunpowder Poi nt. Councilman Moore asked for reconsideration of the vote taken at the last meeting. MSUC (Malcolm/Moore) for reconsideration of the denial of the Days Inn sign - action taken at July 15, 1982 meeting. MSC (Malcolm/Moore) to allow the present Days Inn sign to continue on through the Coastal Commission at its present size for the three-year length of time - the sign is 100 square feet in copy area, 40 feet in height. Council discussion followed - Councilwoman McCandliss commented that a sign should be large enough (billboard size) to allow people sufficient time to change lanes and to get off the freeway and there should also be an indicator (sign) comi ng off "E" Street. Counc ilman Malcolm remarked that the sign should be of significant size to allow people to see it before they pass the off-ramp as studies show that people do not turn around (on the freeways) and come back to a designated spot. Development Services Administrator Robens noted that the Design Review Committee's objection was not to the size of the sign - it was the height. ~~-~-~--- Special Redevelopment Agency Meeting - 2 - July 17, 1982 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: Members Malcolm, Moore, Cox Noes: McCand1iss, Scott MSUC (McCand1 i ss/Scott) to refer back to the Design Review Committee the bayfront signing program for possible adjustments.
