Regular Veterans Advisory Commission Meeting

1. CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista
was called to order at 6:04 p.m.
Francia Castro joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Ricardo Nava joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Lynne Pine joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Tanya Williams joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Vice Chair Akana joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Chair Stewart joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Fire Captain Martinez joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
Commission Secretary Aguilar joined the meeting at 6:00 pm.
2. ROLL CALL
Secretary Aguilar called the roll.

3. PUBLIC COMMENTS
- Robert
- Wants to see more collaborations with other commissions, for example Human
Relations.

- No presentations.
5. ACTION ITEMS
5.1 APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 19,
2025
Moved by Commissioner Castro
Seconded by Tanya Williams
- Commission to approve the meeting minutes.
Result: Carried Unanimously
5.2 APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF MARCH 19, 2025
- Commissioner Pine suggests changing the time of when commissioner
Nava joined.

Seconded by Tanya Williams
- Commission to approve the meeting minutes.
Result: Carried
5.3 APPROVAL OF EXCUSED ABSENCE OF COMMISSIONER CASTRO
AND WILLIAMS FOR THE REGULAR MEETING OF MARCH 19, 2025
Moved by Lynne Pine
Seconded by Commissioner Nava
- Commission to approve the excused absence form for Commissioner
Castro.
Result: Carried Unanimously

5.4 UPDATE ON MILITARY REINTEGRATION PROGRAM
SUBCOMMITTEE
- Comm. Nava reached out to Maurice from San Diego Veterans Coalition
to make presentations at the city's libraries.
- He also notified the commissioners that they have everything to move
forward with adopting the program, especially with American Legion's
support.
- The goal is to have a physical space for the program at the American
Legion.
5.5 UPDATE ON OUTREACH SUBCOMMITTEE
- Comm. Pine stated that they want to get involved with the Veteran's
Home and have presence with them. Both her and commissioner Castro
will work on getting the Home's schedule of events to have a footprint form
the commission.
- Comm. Stewart stated that he can help the commission get a table for
the Veteran's Home Christmas event.
- Comm. Pine stated that American Legion will have a closed session for
October 20th and she will be including a spot for the commission to talk
about what we do.
5.6 UPDATE ON VETERAN OF THE YEAR SUBCOMMITTEE
- Comm. Akana has sent out VOTY applications to several organizations.
- Comm. Pine suggested to reach out to Military Dispatch to promote the
application.
- Liaison Martinez requested Outreach Subcommittee to make a title/reel
format to submit to the Communications team to consider publishing on
City's socials.

- Comm. Akana plans to go to City Council meeting to ask council
members to promote the VOTY award application.
OTHER BUSINESS
6. STAFF COMMENTS
- Secretary announced that the Pledge of Allegiance will be included in every
meeting from now on.
7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS
- Comm. Stewart stated that he sees the subcommittees working quite well for
the commission.
8. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS
- Comm. Akana stated that the next project to have is the library Veteran Wing,
where our goal is to have rotating art.
- Comm. Pine stated that there is a turnover for public libraries, and each branch
has its own individual head staff.
- Liaison Martinez will provide a list of managers of each library branch.
9. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 6:58 p.m.
