REGULAR MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION
Meeting Minutes

1. CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the Sustainability Commission of the City of Chula Vista was
called to order at 5:06 p.m. in Conference Room B-111 located in City Hall, 276
Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista California.
2. ROLL CALL
Secretary Rodriguez called the roll.

4. PRESENTATIONS

4.1 Introduction of New Youth Advisor David Wu
Youth advisor Wu introduced himself to the commission. He shared that
he is in his third year at UCSD, majoring in political science with a
concentration in international relations and minoring in Japanese. His
dream is to hopefully work at the Tokyo embassy. He also shared that he
previously interned with Mayor McCann.

5.2 2022 Municipal Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Conservation Specialist Downs shared a report on the 2024 Municipal
Greenhouse Gas inventory. His presentation focused on municipal
inventory which data was collected using Local Government Operations
protocol. Downs went over the emission inventory which includes water,
sewage, buildings and vehicle fleet fuel use and shared the next steps the
City is taking. His presentation was concluded by sharing resources for
action.

6. STAFF COMMENTS
Environmental Sustainability Manager Wisniewski shared information about the
Better Climate Challenge. Chula Vista was the first and only public sector to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 64%. She then continued by sharing
information about the benchmarking and beyond event that took place at the
library and that Chula Vista was selected by the US Department of Energy to
receive ten million dollars in funding over the next ten years to help support the
ordinance.
Environmental Services Manager Medrano reminded the commission of the
Beautify event taking place this weekend and shared that volunteer sign up was
closed due to reaching capacity. He continued by sharing that Tina Matthias was
selected by the National Recycling Coalition to receive an award in their
upcoming conference taking place in New York. Medrano shared information
about the free compost giveaway on November 2, the drug take back event on
October 26 and shared an update on the single -use plastic ban.
Conservation Specialist Downs asked the commission to nominate any local
Chula Vista or regional climate leaders for the San Diego Regional Climate
Collaborative award.
7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS
Vice -Chair Alatorre shared some sustainability efforts other countries are
implementing. In Italy they had light posts with chargers for EV vehicles and in
the cruise ship he notices that all bottle caps where attached to the bottle in an
effort for them to not end up in the ocean. He would like to explore how that could
be implemented here.
