Join us for the Veterans Advisory Commission meeting at the time and location specified on this agenda to make your comments. Each person will be allotted three (3) minutes to address the Commission. • Submit an eComment. Visit www.chulavistaca.gov/boardmeetings, locate this meeting and click on the comment bubble icon. Click on the item you wish to comment on, and then click on "Leave Comment." • Email comments. Submit comments via email to VAC@chulavistaca.gov • The commenting period will close at noon on the day of the meeting. All comments will be made available to the Commission and the public. CALL TO ORDER A regular meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6 p.m. Nimpa Akana joined the meeting at 6:00 pm. Lynne Pine joined the meeting at 6:00 pm. Anthony Stewart joined the meeting at 6:00 pm. Karina Aguilar joined the meeting at 6:00 pm. Eric Martinez joined the meeting at 6:00 pm. 2. Result: Carried Unanimously 5.4 ELECTION OF COMMISSION CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR FOR THE FISCAL YEAR OF 2024-2025 - Commission voted and passed the election of commissioner Stewart as chair and commissioner Akana as vice chair for the year of 2024-2025. Result: Carried Unanimously 5.5 RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF SUBCOMMITTEES FOR THE FISCAL YEAR OF 2024-2025 - Commissioners agreed to table voting for the re-establishment of the Veteran Wall Subcommittee for next month's regular meeting. Moved by Lynne Pine Seconded by Anthony Stewart Commission to approve the re-establishment of the subcommittee for Veteran of the Year Program. Result: Carried Unanimously Amendment: Commission to approve the re-establishment of the subcommittee for Veteran Wall. 5.6 UPDATE ON MILITARY REINTEGRATION PROGRAM - Commissioner Stewart motioned for the commission to vote to support the program - Commissioners Akana and Pine moved the vote Page 6 of 13 City of Chula Vista Veterans Advisory Commission September 18, 2024 Agenda 4 - Commission to send program presentation to City Clerk and Communications team so commissioner Stewart can present it at the City Council meeting. Commission to approve the support of the program. Yes (3): Nimpa Akana, Lynne Pine, and Anthony Stewart Result: Carried (3 to 0) OTHER BUSINESS 6. STAFF COMMENTS - Liaison mentioned that there has been several visits to the commission website but no submissions for the Veteran of the Year Award - He asked the commission if they would like to make any adjustments to the form 7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS - Commissioner Akana mentioned that the mayor is working on a park that honors Filipino American Veterans on District 3 for next year - Asked Liaison on how to solicit new commissioners, especially from different districts 8. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS - Commissioner Stewart pushed to keep the original submission deadline for the Veteran of the Year Award (August 1st) - Commissioner Pine pushed to have a printed form option on the website - Stewart requested to go over goals and objectives for 2024-2025 as an action item for next month 9. Result: Carried Unanimously 5.2 VETERAN OF THE YEAR PROGRAM UPDATE Commissioners reviewed all applicants' submissions and carried out a vote for applicant Danny Shaffstall to be this year's Veteran of the Year. Moved by Nimpa Akana Seconded by Tanya Williams Commission to vote on a candidate to become the Veteran of the Year. Result: Carried 5.3 UPDATE ON MILITARY REINTEGRATION PROGRAM - Commissioner Stewart will be ready to give a presentation to City Council on one of its September meetings - targeting September 24th. - Commissioner Stewart requested July minutes to be reviewed on September's regular meeting. - Commissioner Stewart will contact City Clerk to reserve a spot on City Council's September 24th meeting in order to give his presentation. 5.4 RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE VETERAN WALL SUBCOMMITTEE FOR THE FISCAL YEAR OF 2024-2025 Commission carried forward the vote to not reestablish the subcommittee for the Veteran Wall. Moved by Francia Castro Seconded by Tanya Williams Commission to approve the re-establishment of the subcommittee for Veteran Wall. Result: Carried Unanimously 5.5 VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR 2024-2025 - Commissioners reviewed and proposed the following goals and objectives for the fiscal year of 2024 - 2025. Commission to advocate for the services and programs offered in the City of Chula Vista by utilizing city social platforms at least once a month. 2. Commission to advocate for the Military Reintegration Program in the City of Chula Vista. 3. Commission to invite presenters from agencies related to veterans to provide presentations at commission meetings for every quarter of the fiscal year. OTHER BUSINESS 6. STAFF COMMENTS - Liaison Martinez will close the submission link for Veteran of the Year. 7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS - Commissioner Stewart thanked the rest of the commissioners for electing him chair of the new fiscal year. 8. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS - Commissioner Akana expressed interest in receiving an update for new commissioner applications. - Commissioner Akana requested an action item for next month's regular meeting for the commission to support the Filipino Veteran Park. - Commissioner Stewart highlighted the celebration of Hispanic Veteran month starting September 17th. 9.
