REGULAR MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION
Meeting Minutes
September 9, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
City Hall, Bldg. C, Conference Room B-111

1. CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the Sustainability Commission of the City of Chula Vista was
called to order at 5.08 p.m. in Conference Room B-111 located in City Hall, 276
Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista California.
2. ROLL CALL
Secretary Rodriguez called the roll.
3. PUBLIC COMMENTS
No public comments submitted
4. PRESENTATIONS
4.1 Introduction of New Commissioner Dr. Eleuterio Buquiran

Newly seated Commissioner Buquiran introduced himself to the
commission and shared his goals and passion for sustainability.
4.2 Edible Food Rescue Efforts in Chula Vista in Compliance With
Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383 Lara, Chapter 395, Statues of 2016)
Recycling Specialist DiDonato shared a presentation on the edible food
recovery progress. Food recovery is part of SB1383 and organic waste
disposal needs to be reduced 75% by 2025 and rescue at least 20% of
currently disposed edible food by 2025. DiDonato went over the
requirements in place prior to SB1383 and what jurisdictions, commercial
food generators and food recovery organizations must now do to meet the
food recovery goal and comply.

5.2 Elect New Vice -Chair for Fiscal Year 2024-2025

Motion to elect Commissioner Alatorre as Vice -Chair of the Sustainability
Commission for fiscal year 2024-2025

5.3 Commission Draft Memo on Artificial Turf Policy Recommendations
Chair Korgan offered his gratitude to the two commissioners that worked
on the draft memo and shared some recommendations when it comes to
presenting to City Council. Discussion was had on time allotted to present

and how the memo would be presented. Commissioner Sharkey will share
a presentation with council that was previously shared with the
commission.

Motion to approve draft memo with the condition that the ask is clearly
outlined and no future use of artificial turf in city owned properties.

OTHER BUSINESS
6. STAFF COMMENTS
Environmental Services Manager Medrano shared information on upcoming
evets such as the Master Composter class scheduled t start on September 17 at
the Living Coast Discovery Center, NatueScape taking place on October 5,
Benchmarking and Beyond event on October 9 and Beautify Chula Vista on
October 19. On behalf of Conservation he shared that a $10 million grant was
awarded from the Department of Energy for benchmarking. He concluded by
sharing that Chair Korgan will be ratified to the Measure P Committee.
7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS
Chair Korgan welcomed Commissioner Buquiran and shared that he looks
forward to working with him. He also mentioned he encourages the current and
future youth member to participate during meetings.
8. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS
Commissioner Knox thanked staff for the CLEAN Newsletter as it provides a lot if
useful information.
Commissioner Salazar shared that she attended her first Bayfront Cultural and
Design meeting.
9. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 6:26 p.m.
