Present: Ma~or Done, 0ounollmen Howe, Lyons, Brown, Oonyers. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS ~ETING: The minutes of the last regular meeting, held November 1, 1952, having been read by each member of this Oouncil, were approved as prepared. FIRE HYDRANT: Upon recommendation of the Fire Chief, approved by Fire C~mw, fe- sioner Lyons, it was decided to replace a two-inch sprinking hydrant, located at Secox Avenue and Y Street, with a standard ~wo-wey ~ inch fire hydrant. This action upon motion by 01. Conyere, seconded by Cl. Brown, which ca,tied. SIREET ~-~: The following requests to remove street trees were granted, upoI motion by Cl. Lyons, seconded by Cl. Conyers, which oarrie~[: Y. R. Scott, to remove every other tree in the parkway along the north side of his orchard on G Street, at Sixth Avenue. At present these trees are too close toget~ to permit proper growth. Edward Zleser, one Pepper tree at the corne~ of Landis Avenue and F Street. T1 tree is too close ~o the intersection, and the property in front of which it grows ia Considered business property, and the tree will not be replaced. Guy A Bigelow, ~o trees, one Pepper and one Olive, in front of his property o: Second Avenue, at Roosevelt Street. These trees to be replaced, and Mr. Bigelow is re quired to m, ke the deposit of $5.00 for each t~ee as required by ordinance. WHARF~AT COTT0~EEDPLANT: The clerk read a com,muUication from the U. S. DlstrJ Engineer, at Los Angeles, giving instructions for the destruction of this wharf. Buil~ ing T~pector ?~arton reported his efforts to sell the salvaged l~ber from this pro- Ject. No action was taken as there appears to be no purchaser for the material. S~TE FIRE TRUCK LOC~T~D ~RE: The clerk informed this Council that he had wril the State Forestry Division, on November 5, 19SZ, asking information as to the insursm carried on this vehicle, and asking for a file copy of the lease w~ich this Council had signed and forwarded to the division. Clerk instructed to ~rlte again. B~RANDWINEPERL~IT: A request for a permit to sell light wines and beer, at ?AS Third Avenue, submitted by Fred C. Otto, was read. Action withheld pending any change in the present prohibition laws. 0RNA~TAL S'I~T LIGHTS: The subject of reducihg the present cost of m~intain- Lug the ornamental street lights in the business district on Third Avenue, was introd~ The proposition was to change the size of the present incandescent lamps from ~00 c. ~ to ~00 c.p. ~lso, for the city to take over the matter of replenishing burned out ls cleauing globes, painting standards, etc., the Electric Light Company to furnish the e tric current, only. City Engineer iastructed to investigate and report on the cost fc this change. STATE GAS TAX: The State League of ~icipalities submitted a resolution, askJ this Council to adopt it, calling on the State Legislature to pass laws giving the o~ a portion of the stats gas tax. No action taken, inasmuch as State Senator Harper, o~ this district, has a bill prepared, which he intends to introduce at the next session the State Legilature. sTREET I~-~ ALONG BAY BOUi~ARD: ~. C. B. 0fferam, addressed this Council, requested the removal of a row of Eucalyptus trees, growing on the east side of Bay Be evard, between F and G Streets. S~REET TO ABANDON: A petition, eig~d by the property owners effected, was pre sented, ia which the property owners request ~he city abandon that portion of D Stree lying between Ath ~-~ 5th Avenues. The reason far the request is that this part of D Street traverses ewer grades that will m~ it impracticable to ever uae it as a thor fare, e,~ that it is now fenced off, preventing eueh uae. Conyars stated that the police had ecm~lained to him that the shrub on each side of the ernsewalk, in the plaza, between F and Center streets, a~e a mens to pedestrians, in that this shrubbery prevents the view of mttorists and pedestrians alike. Tree Warden Elliott iuetrueted to re,owe the shrubbery mentioned. Elliott wa instructed to investigate the cost of r~noving -~ shrubbery frmm the plaza, plant it grass, with flower beds located therein, and report back to this Council.
