CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA
February 8, 2021 Via Teleconference
6:00 p.m.
Pursuant to the Governor of the State of California's Executive Order N-29-20, and in the interest
of public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Cultural Arts
Commission and staff participated in this meeting via teleconference. All votes were taken by roll
call.
CALL TO ORDER
A Regular Meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order
at 6.00 p.m. in the Chula Vista Public Library, located at 365 F Street, Chula Vista, California
and by teleconference.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Commissioners Bishop, Maynard, Redondo, Roberts, J.
Rodriguez, T. Rodriguez, and Ward
ABSENT: Chair Gray and Commissioner Kohse
ALSO PRESENT: Principal Librarian Magbanua
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Vice Chair J. Rodriguez called for a two-minute pause to allow members of the public to
submit electronic comments on the item. Secretary Magbanua announced that 0
electronic comments had been received and 0 comments had been received via email.
CONSENT CALENDAR
1. APPROVAL OF THE DECEMBER 14TH, 2020 MINUTES
Staff recommendation: Commission approve the minutes.
2. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS
Communications from Commissioners Redondo, T. Rodriguez, and Ward for
excused absences for the meeting of December 141h,2020.
Staff recommendation: Commission excuse the absence.
ACTION: Commissioner Ward moved to approve the Consent Calendar.
Commissioner Maynard seconded the motion, and it carried,by the
following roll call vote:

3. ART PRESENTATION FOR THE NEW SWEETWATER PARK AT THE CHULA
VISTA BAYFRONT—ARTIST ROBERTO SALAS
Local artist Roberto Salas presented his previous work in anticipation of the art he
will be creating for the new Sweetwater Park at the Chula Vista Bayfront.
4. ELIMINATION OF THE EMERGENCY ART SUPPORT SUBCOMMITTEE AND
REASSIGN MEMBERS
Staff recommendation: Eliminate the Emergency Art Support Subcommittee and
reassign its Commissioner members
ACTION: Commissioner Bishop moved to eliminate the Emergency Art Support
Subcommittee and reassign Chair Gray and Commissioner Ward.
Commissioner Maynard seconded the motion, and it carried,by the
following roll call vote:

Rodriguez, T. Rodriguez, and Ward
No: 0
Absent: 2 — Chair Gray and Commissioner Kohse
5. COMMISSION CONTRIBUTIONS TO ASSET MAPPING SUBCOMMITTEE
RESOURCE LIST
Staff recommendation: Each Commissioner add their arts resources to the Asset
Mapping Subcommittee Resource List.
ACTION: Commissioner Bishop moved that each Commissioner add their arts
resources to the Asset Mapping Subcommittee Resource List by
submitting them to Principal Librarian Magbanua. Commissioner
Maynard seconded the motion, and it carried,by the following roll call
vote:

No: 0

OTHER BUSINESS
6. STAFF COMMENTS
a. Principal Librarian Magbanua presented the newly re-installed Chromasol
sculptures on the west side of the Civic Center Branch Library.
b. Principal Librarian Magbanua announced a new upcoming webpage to highlight
the Commissioners.
7. CHAIR'S COMMENTS
a. Vice Chair J. Rodriguez asked about the status of the McCandliss Arts Awards for
this year.
8. COMMISSIONERSVBOARD MEMBERS' COMMENTS
a. Commissioner Bishop discussed the Arts Curation Subcommittee idea for hosting
potential virtual art galleries for student art on the Cultural Arts website.
b. Commissioner Redondo discussed the Economic Development Subcommittee
idea of proposing tax incentives for local businesses who promote arts at their
place of business. He also discussed the idea of presenting an economic impact
report on the arts in Chula Vista.
c. Commissioner Maynard discussed the ideas from the Marketing and Outreach
Subcommittee meeting including checking in on the Performing and Visual Arts
Grant recipients, creating a virtual panel or talk to connect local artists to
resources and provide tips for success, an online checklist of resources for
emerging artists, an events calendar, and a more robust promotion of local arts.
d. Commissioner Ward reiterated the Asset Mapping Subcommittee's request to
send Principal Librarian Magbanua as many local arts resources the
Commissioners can think of for the Asset Mapping Resource List.
ADJOURNMENT
At 7:28 p.m. Vice Chair J. Rodriguez adjourned the meeting to the next Regular Meeting on
March 8`h, 2021 at 6.00p.m. at 365 F Street, Chula Vista California.
