Dear Chair Zaker and Member of the Planning Commission,
On behalf of Scripps Mercy Hospital, I would like to express our support for the exciting project
proposed by Brookfield Properties across the street from Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista,
which will consist of 244 residential units adding much needed new housing to west Chula Vista.
Scripps Mercy Hospital provides care on two campuses in Chula Vista and Hillcrest. The Scripps
Mercy Hospital Chula Vista campus provides a variety of medical and surgical services,
including inpatient and outpatient care. The hospital includes a 24-hour emergency department,
maternity ward (including a Level II neonatal intensive care unit) and many other specialty
services ranging from cancer care to stroke care. Several outpatient services are located across
the street, in the 450 and 480 medical buildings on 4th Avenue. These include outpatient imaging
and physical rehabilitation services.
The project proposed by Brookfield Properties will expand the residential capacity with new
townhouses consisting of one to three bedrooms, giving local workforce more options to not only
work in Chula Vista but also live in Chula Vista. It will also revitalize the 13 acres across the
street from the hospital where the old Sears building currently stands empty.
This project will be a great resource for our employees and medical residents looking for newer
housing within walking distance to the hospital. We hope the City of Chula Vista approves this
residential endeavor and look forward to seeing the project ready for residents.
