HomeMy WebLinkAboutcc min 1954/06/03 MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA Held Thursda~v June 3, 1954 The Council met at 2:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers at City Hall on the above date pursuant to "Consent for holding Special Meeting", signed by all Council Members. Present: Councilmen Rader, Halferty, Riesland, DeWolfe Absent: Counc~ lm~n Hobel Also present: City A~m~nistrator Floyd ~/POST OFFICE DISCUSSION Councilman DeWolfe stated the firm of Hobart-Topper, represented by Mr. Arthur Lynds, was willing to transfer their property at Fourth Avenue and F. Street to the City in exchange for another parcel on the Civic Center site large enough for them to build the proposed Library. This move would make City property available to the Government for open bidding on their proposed Post Office. Local Postmaster Stahlheber suggested that the City be specific as to the property made available for the Post Office, and not to include property outside the actual needs of the Post Office. Mr. Burn Bernas~ presented to the Council plans for a proposed Post Office on F. Street across from the Civic Center site, for which a zone variance is pending before the planning Corem1 ssion. The Council was not favorable to the F. Street location. It was moved by Councilm~n Rader, seconded by Councilman DeWolfe, and carried, that the Council approve the transfer of certain property on the Civic Center site to the firm of Hobart-Topper for their property at the corner of Fourth Avenue and F. Street, subject to confirmation by the City Attorney as to its legality. The motion carried by the following vote, to-wit: AYES: Noes s Absent: Councilmen Rader, Halferty, Riesland, DeWolfe None Councilman Nobel Mr. William Drew in the audience objected to locating the Post Office andre on Civic Center property, and opposed the transfer of any City property to other governmental or private a~encies. Postmaster Stahlheber recom,~nded the Council decide on approximately fifteen thousand square feet of land to be used for Post Office purposes, and that the Mayor, or one of the Councilm~n go to Washin~mton with Mr. Arthur ~VndS and express the City's wishes to the Postal department. RESOLUTION No. 1562 - Approving Exchange of Real Property Offered by Councilman Riesland, read in full, passed, adopted and approved by the following vote, to-wit: AYES: Councilmen Rader, Halferty, Riesland, DeWolfe Noes: None Absent: Councilm~n Hobel Mayor Halferty appointed Councilman DeWolfe to accompany Mr. Lynds to Washington to present the desires of the Council. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by Councilman Riesland, seconded by Councilman DeWolfe and carried, that the meeting adjourn sine die.
