HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-12-17 University Center Task Force Agenda Packet CITY OF CHULA VISTA AND SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE JOINT TASK FORCE FOR UNIVERSITY CENTER Meeting Minutes November 5, 2021, 3:00 p.m. Council Chambers, 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, CA Present:Mayor Mary Casillas Salas, Councilmember Steve Padilla, Southwestern College Vice President Roberto Alcantar, Southwestern College Trustee Kirin Macapugay Also Present:Deputy City Manager Eric Crockett, Special Projects Manager Miranda Evans, City Clerk Kerry Bigelow _____________________________________________________________________ 1.CALL TO ORDER A regular meeting of the City of Chula Vista and Southwestern College Joint Task Force for University Centerwas called to order at 3:06 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, located at 276 Fourth Ave Chula Vista, CA 91910. 2.ROLL CALL City Clerk Bigelow called the roll. 3.PUBLIC COMMENTS There were none. 4.DISCUSSIONITEMS 4.1Update on Southwestern College University Center Dr. Mark Sanchez, representing Southwestern College, gave a presentation on Southwestern College University Center efforts and responded to questions of the Task Force. 4.2Update on City of ChulaVista University Efforts Deputy City Manager Crockett, representing the City of Chula Vista, gave a presentation on the City's university efforts. 5.ACTION ITEMS 5.1Approval of Meeting Minutes of September 27, 2019 1 Moved bySouthwestern College Vice President Roberto Alcantar Seconded byCouncilmember Steve Padilla To approve the minutes of September 27, 2019. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes (4): Mayor Mary Casillas Salas, Councilmember Steve Padilla, Southwestern College Vice President Roberto Alcantar, and Southwestern College Trustee Kirin Macapugay Result: Carried (4 to 0) 5.2Partnership Proposal Academic Program Planning and Infrastructure Funding Request Dr. Sanchez and Deputy City Manager Crockett spoke regarding the proposal and responded to questions of the Task Force. Moved bySouthwestern College Trustee Kirin Macapugay Seconded byMayor Mary Casillas Salas To approve the proposal and direct staff to move forward with completing a joint funding request and return to the Task Force for final approval. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes (4): Mayor Mary Casillas Salas, Councilmember Steve Padilla, Southwestern College Vice President Roberto Alcantar, and Southwestern College Trustee Kirin Macapugay Result: Carried (4 to 0) OTHER BUSINESS 6.TASK FORCE MEMBERS COMMENTS Vice President Alcantar thanked staff and participants for their work on the project. In response to questions from Trustee Macapugay, Deputy City Manager Crockett provided information regarding interest from nonprofit universities. Mayor Casillas Salas and Councilmember Padilla thanked staff and participants. 7.ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m. _____________________________ Kerry K. Bigelow, MMC, City Clerk 2
