HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-12-16 VAC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA December 16, 2020 Via Teleconference 6:00 p.m. Pttrsctant to the Governor of the State of California's Executive Order N-29-20, and in the interest of public health and safety dttring the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Veterans Advisory Commission and staffparticipated in this meeting via teleconference. All votes were taken by roll call. CALL TO ORDER A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by teleconference. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Balolong, Bartlett, Vice Chair Larkin, Chair Sears ABSENT: Commissioners Mueller, Torres, Moyer ALSO, PRESENT: Captain Redmond and SRO Secretary Bravo PUBLIC COMMENTS Chair Sears called for a two -minute pause to allow members of the public to submit any final electronic public comments. Secretary Bravo announced that no electronic comments had been received and no comments had been received via email. ACTION ITEMS WELCOMING CAPT. REDMOND AS OUR NEW STAFF LIASION AND TO THANK CAPT. THUNBERG FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE CITY AND TO OUR VETERAN COMMUNITY Commission welcomed Capt. Redmond as the new staff liaison for the commission. Commission also thanked Capt. Thunberg for his service with the board and to the veteran commission. Commission Capt. Redmond gave brief introduction on his background and career with the city. Secretary Bravo annottnced that no electronic comments had been received and no comments had been received via email. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2020. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Commission approve the meeting minutes Yes: 4 — Chair Sears, Vice Chair Larkin, Commissioner Balolong and Commissioner Bartlett No: 0 Abstain: 0 Chair Sears and called for a two -minute pause to allow members of the public to submit electronic comments on the item. Secretary Bravo annottnced that no electronic comments had been received and no comments had been received via email. 3. DISCUSS AND DIRECT STAFF TO WORK WITH CHAIR TO RESPOND TO EMAIL RECEIVED REFERENCING THE VETERAN OF THE YEAR AWARD. Commissioners Balolong and Bartlett will re-evaluate the Veteran of the Year process and what can be done to improve it. Chair Sears will draft an email and present it to the commission for final approval. Chair Sears and called for a two -minute pause to allow members of the public to submit electronic comments on the item. DISCUSSION ON POTENTIALLY MOVING THE REGULAR MEETINGS OF THE COMMISSION TO THE CHULA VISTA VETERANS MEMORIAL BUILDING IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE THE MEETING MORE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Chair discussed moving the monthly meeting to the Veterans Memorial Building which will make the meetings more accessible to the public. Commissioner Bartlett will reach out to Councilmember Galvez to get the exact location and to get more information. Redmond received an email reference a discrepancy on the Veterans Memorial Hall on the city website. 6. CHAIR'S COMMENTS a. UPDATE REGARDING UPCOMING VETERANS EVENTS Wreaths Across America at Glen Abbey Memorial Park. In coordination with Freedom Station, is the decorating of hospital rooms at the Naval Medical Center for active duty and veterans. 7. COMMISSIONERS'/BOARD MEMBERS' COMMENTS Vice Chair Larkin asked Chair Sears on an update on an email received back in September regarding the lack of an American Flag at Memorial Square. Chairs Sears will contact the resident and update the commission next month. Commissioner asked the possibility of adding additional links to the city website for veterans. Commissioner Balolong discussed having a guest speaker four times a year.
