Dated: __2/19/2021_ Signed: ___________ In the News February Spotlight — Chula Vista Welcome to healthy Chula Vista, the place where everyone counts! The University of California San Diego Center for Community Health, the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative and other community partners offer a collaborative and innovative nutrition program to connect residents with the resources needed to achieve food security. The Chula Vista project team will engage and train city residents through a Resident Leadership Academy, which has a curriculum designed to build understanding of systems and root causes of food insecurity. Resident leaders will identify the right level of intervention and design and implement strategies needed to support local residents. They have already onboarded 4 promotores, or community health workers, and engaged them with community residents to support food security and obesity prevention efforts across Chula Vista. This network builds on the success of the ¡Más Fresco! More Fresh Nutrition Incentive Program and the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative. They also now recruited 10 Resident Leaders and will be conducting their third of ten Resident Leadership Academy trainings. What is so incredible about this project team is that through their strong emphasis on community engagement and facilitative leadership, their project is using the power of resident leaders, with support of a diverse network of community partners, to leverage new and existing resources in the city to address and prevent chronic health conditions. By equipping residents with the necessary tools and strategies to advocate for policy, systems and environmental change in support of healthy living, improved health outcomes have never been more possible in the city of Chula Vista! Check out what one of their resident leaders had to say about their project: “I love the opportunity to build community! As our community has experienced this pandemic and the accompanying isolation, this is a great way to connect people. I also believe this project creates an opportunity to decrease the stress that people are experiencing and provides an opportunity to focus on things that are within our control.” Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge Partners American Public Health Association 800 I St. NW, Washington DC 20001 www.apha.org 202-777-2742 Healthy Chula Vista Resident Leadership Academy –Key Insights “I love the opportunity to build community! As our community has experienced this pandemic and the accompanying isolation this is a great way to connect people. I also believe this project creates an opportunity to decrease the stress that people are experiencing and provides an opportunity to focus on things that are within our control.” “Food insecurity is a form of inequality and injustice. I look forward to participating in creating an environment where good food is available to our neighbors and good food is treasured. I know there are issues of access and education involved in making sure resources created are utilized, but I know it is a challenge we can overcome.” “With so much unrest, turmoil and distress from the election sparked by divisive leaders at the national level, I feel so powerless to change things on the national level, but I can find small things to do locally. ” “I am interested in improving and taking part in projects that benefit the future of the children in my county.” “I want to contribute and be part of a positive change in this problem that affects the Hispanic community. For example, change the concept of (diet), for “lifestyle.” “It interests me because it is for the betterment of our community and the families that live in Chula Vista.” “I want to be part of a great change in our community, collaborate in what I like to do for the community.” “There is an openness and receptiveness on behalf of the partners to begin this project. We are seeing a readiness from the community to take on this project.”
