Subject: Chula Vista Shopping Center
Chula Vista City Council.
I am writing to you today to express my opinion concerning the blighted shopping center in
our community that is located on Bonita Road, boarded by the Old Bonita Store and the Wells Fargo
Bank.
For several years, the condition of the buildings is horrible. Several years ago, the owner of that
property appeared before the Sweetwater Valley Civic Association at the board’s request.
He stated that he was applying for funds to renovate the property as his intention was to ‘leave’ it for
his relatives at some future date as a legacy . Nothing ever happened.
The condition of the buildings and parking lot is a serious hazard to the renters and their customers. For
many years, I have been a customer of Lydia’s Mexican Restaurant, barbecue restaurant, the Liquor
store and the Japanese restaurant.
Although I am not a resident of Chula Vista: I am a Bonita resident. That part of Chula Vista along Bonita
Road is to all concerned ‘considered’ Bonita. Many times, we at the Civic Association and The Planning
Group, (I am a member of both), hear from residents of Chula Vista and Bonita questioning “who is in
charge of the shopping center?” We always have to say, “It’s not us”, it belongs to Chula Vista. Isn’t it
time for Chula Vista to do something?
We at the Civic Association have addressed this problem with John McCann and his aide, but the
response of, ”We’re working on it.” really isn’t a good enough one.
Please address this problem at your Council meeting this Tuesday.
Thank you,
Stephen Stonehouse
