RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CHULA VISTA IN SUPPORT OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR
THE VIOLENT ATTACK ON OUR CAPITOL,
CONDEMNATION ON THE ASSAULT TO OUR
DEMOCRACY AND CONDEMNING THE USE OF VIOLENCE
AS A POLITICAL TOOL
WHEREAS, the people of the City of Chula Vista believe in the rule of law and stand for
public safety and against violence; and
WHEREAS, as elected officials our oaths of office require that we defend the Constitution
from all enemies foreign and domestic; and
WHEREAS, armed and unarmed seditionists attacked and breached the United States
Capitol Building on January 6, 2021 with the express goal of undermining Congress’ certification
of the 2020 Presidential Election and interrupting the peaceful transfer of power; and
WHEREAS, Capitol Police Officers, such as Officer Eugene Goodman, bravely fought off
the seditionists inside the Capitol which protected the Vice President, Senators and Representatives
from harm, but at a cost of the death of Officer Brian Sicknick and injuries to many other Capitol
Police Officers; and
WHEREAS, more events that incite violence have taken place since January 6th in San
Diego County, across California, and across the country; and
WHEREAS, seditionists at the national, state, and local level have taken part in or
expressed support for using violence as a political tool to overturn a free and fair democratic
election thereby attacking the Constitution; and
WHEREAS, those seditionists and acts of violence have been incited directly by Donald
John Trump, President of the United States, in his conduct in the months preceding the certification
with false statements about the Presidential election results and widespread fraud and invitations
to Washington, DC to fight for the White House even after losing the election; and
WHEREAS, those seditionists and acts of violence have been incited directly by leaders in
our government, including the President of the United States himself, by the making of patently
false statements and accusations regarding the November 2020 election, and by summoning and
directing a gathered mob to take a lawless action at the Capitol; and
WHEREAS, because such actions constitute high crimes and misdemeanors, and because
he has demonstrated that he poses an ongoing threat to our national security, democracy, and the
Constitution, the House of Representatives has impeached the President in order to remove him
from office and to prevent him from holding future office; and
WHEREAS, law enforcement agents have reported that additional acts of sedition and
violence have been planned throughout the country and in Washington, DC thereby continuing the
assault on our Constitution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Chula Vista,
based on the facts and circumstances set forth above, to (1) condemn the attack on the U.S. Capitol
and the use of violence as a political tool; (2) urge the United States Senate to immediately convene
a trial to hold Donald Trump accountable for his unlawful actions against the U.S. Constitution,
with appropriately severe consequences if convicted; and (3) urge all law enforcement agencies
with jurisdiction to fully investigate and hold accountable all other participants in the assault on
the U.S. Capital and the U.S. Constitution, and to take all other necessary and appropriate actions
to protect lawmakers and the institutions of democracy throughout the United States.
