Dear Chula Vista Council,
Each year thousands of coyotes and other animals suffer needlessly at the hands of
unscrupulous nuisance wildlife trappers as inhumane methods to kill wildlife are frequently
used — including drowning, chest crushing, and injection with chemical solvents that are
not intended for euthanizing animals. Even those trappers who assert that they use only
humane cages can still fall short when it comes to complying with legal mandates to check
the cages every few hours to make sure that the target animal is in there, not someone's
pet, and that the targeted animal is not left exposed to other injuries. This is especially
important in our increasing heat and fire weather. Though non -lethal approaches to wildlife
management are preferred, an animal, even a nuisance, should not be tormented before
being killed and should be permitted to save him or herself should a fire erupt.
Please also keep in mind that coyotes are also part of an ecosystem that helps to naturally
control the proliferation of other nuisance creatures without creating an imbalance in the
food chain.
Finally, there are ways that help humans to co -exist with wildlife including but not limited
to, keeping small pets inside at dawn and dusk, keeping garbage cans closed, stopping
leaking water sources, and more,
Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Madeline Bernstein
