I strongly support removal of the statue of Christopher Columbus. My children both attended Discovery School
from its first day. They played soccer and enjoyed parties and play dates at Discovery Park. But we never realized
that these important community locations were named in honor of Christopher Columbus. His legacy is
antithetical to the values and vision of Chula Vista. For many people in our community, the statue represents
patriarchy and oppression. It does not represent our Welcoming city, and we should no longer live in the shadow
of this symbol of our ugly past.

I oppose the removal and and strongly support the replacement of the statue of Christopher Columbus at
Discovery Park. I urge the Commission to not give in to the whims of political correctness and what amounts to
be nothing but mob rule in an attempt to re-write history. I further urge the commission to recognize that it is not
their role to alter history but to preserve it so that others can freely learn from it. Tearing down this statue
amounts to nothing else than censorship that serves no purpose and only conjures up ignorance and intolerance
because a few are offended. As a tax paying citizen and 30 year resident and as a latino of color of both indian
and european descent I am not offended by Christopher Columbus. I ask that if this is such an issue of
importance, that you recommend to the City Council to put it on the ballot and let the people decide. Please do
not proceed out of ignorance and repeat the mistakes of the past by permanently removing this statue. You'll be
not better than the Taliban if you do.

I encourage the Commission to use social media platforms and the City website to promote our Welcoming City's
vision of inclusivity and equity during Welcoming Week, Sept 12-20, 2020. This year's national theme is "Creating
Home Together" for the week and Welcoming America has created a toolkit full of resources. One possible idea
could be to spotlight on the rich diversity in Chula Vista - by posting photos (each day or in a virtual gallery) of
household members in their homes, since a HOME is not just a house. A home creates safety, acceptance,
belonging. Another idea might be to emphasize how EVERYONE in our community counts (as in the CENSUS),
cares, creates, connects, cooks, contributes ... Just some quick ideas. But we should not miss this opportunity to
promote our community values.
