HomeMy WebLinkAboutWritten Communications - Item 7 - 17 Comments (4:00 PM) From:daylin navarro To:Mary Salas Cc:Kerry Bigelow Date:Tuesday, June 9, 2020 4:03:43 PM Warning: External Honorable Mayor Mary Salas, My name is (ADD YOUR NAME), I am a resident Email of Chula Vista. In light of the most recent tragedies of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and all of the countless murders of Black and Brown Americans that go unnoticed, it is apparent that the police are overfunded and are not held accountable for their misconduct and misuse of force. Chula Vista’s proposed budget for Police makes up 28% of the overall General Fund for 2021. This is not only extreme; it is also VERY alarming that Chula Vista’s elected officials DO NOT hold the well-being of their constituents, their community, at the highest level of importance as they should, due to the proposed over funding of the Chula Vista Police Department. The Police budget for 2021, has almost doubled from 2020’s $4,403183 to $8,210,211. There is $470,00 budgeted towards Police supplies, uniforms, computers, and other equipment, and $939,057 that is on the agenda to be put towards purchasing 22 Ford Police Interceptor vehicles under PO#2201746. All while our public libraries are outdated and understaffed, our parks are unable to be maintained properly due to lack of necessary resources and minimal staffing. Chula Vistan’s are living on the streets, and resources for marginalized communities lack proper funding, computers, supplies, and resources, which make up only a portion of the disparities amongst our communities of color. It is apparent that time and time again, our unique voices have been ignored, and what we need is NOT to increase police funding for a city of 272,202 that needs to be investing in it’s communities and it’s future. I ask that you decrease and reallocate the bloated budget for Police, and that you VOTE NO on the purchasing of an additional 22 Ford Police interceptors. I am hoping that with the current state of our city, THE COUNTRY, and the collective outcry from the community that you each see how important it is to invest in our community, in our people, our children, and all of us who eat, breathe, sleep, and live here in Chula Vista. We all have come together to demand that you DEFUND THE POLICE and FUND OUR COMMUNITY. FUND OUR FUTURE! Budget Warning: External Email Barbara Scott I want an outfitted PD, w/ the ability to respond if I need them, immediately, & ready to take care of me. The way we piss-away our tax dollars on social programs, is a crime in itself, almost as bad as our public schools have become so top heavy, w/ only 15% of our taxes getting to the classrooms. No, folks, we need to fund these needed cars for our Officers, not do the defunding hogwash that’s sweeping the country. That’s a fad that has come from the idiot, left-leaning politicians over the last 2 weeks of rioting. You want libraries & parks? Hell, we haven’t been able to use the ones we have for 3 months, because of the Wuhan virus, yet our Police Officers stood-tall for every shift. This effort to defund our PD’s is a fad, & a dangerous one @ that. I want the best funded PD in America, right here in Chula Vista, to help all of us. You defund them of $950,000 badly needed dollars, you’re going to be calling the librarian for help, because that’s all you’ll have. Get-out of your bubbles, & realize the need for a PD that is ready to respond, & have the cars to get them to you! We have a Chief, in a line of several, who is totally committed to protecting our precious city. I can think of a lot of places, to quit wasting tax dollars, but the PD’s not one of them. Quit your micro-managing of our PD, let them do their jobs. You’re exposing the safety of this city, w/ your narrow- minded, sounds-good, stupid thinking. This is in line with what the voters approved in Measure P which included as you know included repairs, upgrades, new equipment and vehicles for Chula Vista’s Police Department to, help protect life and property of Chula Vista residents, businesses helping to ensure Chula Vista remains one of the safest cities in the nation. Additionally, the voters also supported Measure A which will increase public safety staffing, including the number of officers to address our public safety staffing crisis. Existing and new officers require reliable vehicles are a necessity to be abler to perform the basic functions of their job and are not a luxury for our officers. I am very much aware of the conversation and national dialogue to “defund” or reallocate Police funding. Although I agree, and in fact the Public safety committee convened by the City manager a few years discussed, public safety is a holistic approach that requires investment in a variety of different areas not just police, but also the cultural arts, education, recreation, social health initiatives and others, vehicles remain a basic necessity for our officers. This purchase makes sense fiscally and is an investment that voters have backed with both Measure A and P. Your constituent, Isabella Lowry From:Dylan Sparks To:John McCann;Jill Galvez;Steve C.
