HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-01-15 VAC Minutes MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA January 15, 2020 6:00 pm A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6:02 pm at the Chula Vista Police Department, 315 Fourth Ave, CV, Admin Conference Room (2nd Floor) ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Mueller, Larkin, Torres, Balolong, Vice Chair Wynne and Chair Sears ABSENT: Commissioner Bartlett ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Thunberg and SRO Secretary Claudia Bravo CONSENT CALENDAR 1. Approval of Minutes from November 20, 2019 ACTION: Vice Chair Wynne moved to approve the minutes from November 20, 2019 as written. Commissioner Torres seconded the motion and it passed by the following vote: Yes: 2—Balolong,Larkin and Mueller and Chair Sears No: 0 Public Comments Guest: Darmy Cerreon(CV Veteran of the Year 2017-2018)— Discussed the 2020 Census and asked the Commission for support. COMMISSION TO DISCUSS CHANGING MEETING LOCATION Discussion on having special meetings four times a year, one in each of the districts. Potential locations suggested were Fire Station #4 (District 1), Police Department (District 2), Southwestern College (District 3) and South Library (District 4). The special meetings to take place each quarter, every three months. Capt. Thunberg will reach out to Districts #1, #2 and #4 and Commissioner Larkin will confirm with District #3. Table topic for next month. 4. POLICY STATEMENT THAT OUTLINES IN DETAIL THE VETERAN OF THE YEAR PROCESS Commission reviewed the Veteran of the Year timeline. Discussing ways to advertise the Veteran of the Year. Commissioner Balolong recommended reaching out to the councilmembers from each district to advertise the VOY on their email blast. 5. DISCUSSION ON BROADENING OUR CONTACT WITH VET ORGANIZATIONS DISCUSSING NEW DOD RULES FOR VETERANS AND INVITING VETERANS TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY SERVICE Chair Sears discussed new changes for veterans with the Department of Defense. Website link to be provided. Capt. Thunberg will add a link to the city website as information only. Table topic for next month. STAFF PRESENTATIONS None OTHER BUSINESS Staff Comments: Capt. Thunberg will work on scheduling special quarterly meetings, email blast from councilmembers to advertise VOY and discussion on Memorial Day banners. Chair Comments: Commissioners' Comments: Commissioner Torres emailed link to Chamber of Commerce to advertise the VOY.
