HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2020-002 RESOLUTION NO. 2020-002 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA ACCEPTING $559,634 FROM THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, TOBACCO GRANT PROGRAM, ADDING ONE PEACE OFFICER TO THE AUTHORIZED STAFFING LEVEL OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, APPROVING MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE CITY AND CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, AND APPROPRIATING SAID FUNDS TO THE POLICE GRANTS SECTION OF THE STATE GRANTS FUND WHEREAS, in July 2019, Chula Vista Police Department submitted a grant application to the California Department of Justice, with objectives of reducing the appeal of tobacco/vape products to youth by using prevention, intervention, education and enforcement; and WHEREAS, funds from the California Department of Justice Tobacco Grant Program is made available from the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016 (Proposition 56); and WHEREAS, the California Department of Justice awarded $559,634 to the City for the Tobacco Grant Program, which adds one Peace Officer to the authorized staffing level of the Police Department; and WHEREAS, grants funds from the California Department of Justice Tobacco Grant Program will be used for the personnel costs of one School Resource Officer, associated uniform and gear to equip the officer, and overtime for tobacco enforcement operations. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Chula Vista, that it accepts $559,634 from the State of California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, Tobacco Grant Program, adds one Peace Officer to the authorized staffing level of the Police Department and appropriates $170,067 to personnel services, $11,000 to supplies and services and $9,053 to the Other Expenses category of the Police Grants Section of the State Grants Fund. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Chula Vista, that it approves the Memorandum of Understanding between the City and California Department of Justice for the Tobacco Grant Program, in the form presented, with such minor modifications as may be required or approved by the City Attorney, a copy of which shall be kept on file in the Office of the City Clerk, and authorizes and directs the City Manager and Chief of Police to execute same.
