RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CHULA VISTA ACCEPTING THE 2018 STAFFING FOR
ADEQUATE FIRE AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE GRANT
AWARD FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND
SECURITY, FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
AGENCY TO HIRE 12 FIREFIGHTERS
WHEREAS, the City of Chula Vista Fire Department delivers fire, rescue and emergency
medical services to Chula Vista residents and visitors every day; and
WHEREAS, the Fire Department has been unsuccessful in meeting threshold compliance
with City, Fire Department, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1710 response
standards; and
WHEREAS, the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant (SAFER)
was created to provide funding directly to fire departments to help increase or maintain the
number of trained “front line” firefighters available in their communities; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the SAFER grant is to enhance local fire departments’ abilities to
comply with staffing, operations, and response standards established by NFPA 1710; and
WHEREAS, the SAFER grant will provide funding to hire and train 12 new firefighters
to staff Engine 60 in the Millenia development area with four firefighters; and
WHEREAS, the SAFER grant is a cost-sharing grant that covers personnel and direct
benefits with a three-year performance period, with the Federal share being $3,027,658 and the
City share being $1,882,058.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Chula
Vista, that it accepts the 2018 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER)
grant award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management
Agency to hire 12 firefighters.
