A meeting of the City of Chula Vista and Southwestern College Joint Task Force for University Center was called to order at 8:00 A.M. in the Executive Conference Room, located at City of Chula Vista City Hall, 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: City of Chula Vista: Mayor Casillas Salas and Councilmember Pat Aguilar Southwestern College: Norma Hernandez, Governing Board Member and Griselda Delgado, Governing Board Member ABSENT: None ALSO PRESENT: City of Chula Vista: City Manager Gary Halbert, Director of Economic Development Eric Crockett and Chesnut Properties Principal Lee Chesnut ACTION ITEM 1. DISCUSS NEXT STEPS AND NEEDS FOR THE UNIVERSITY CENTER • Infrastructure is needed on the University Center site and Chesnut can assist • Chesnut and Southwestern College will work together to facilitate forming a partnership to build a university • Student housing is critical to bringing revenue into the University Center • The University Center will build on other successes in the neighborhood such as the idea of a binational university • The University Center will be able to host 600 students and 150 employees • The long-term plan is to grow the University Center’s capacity to 1,000 students PUBLIC COMMENTS • Sylvia – How long will the university be here? o Lee Chesnut – Lease is for 15 years but will likely be renewed • Maya – How closely tied is announcing the name of the college when the contract is official? o Lee Chesnut – Very closely tied DRAFT 2 STAFF PRESENTATIONS 1. STATUS UPDATE ON THE UNIVERSITY AND INNOVATION MASTER PLAN • Eric Crockett, Director of Economic Development Services o Environmental agreement is closed and comments will be presented to City Council in July or August prior to submitting the master plan 2. MILLENIA PROJECT UPDATE – THINK CAMPUS • Eric Crockett, Director of Economic Development and Lee Chesnut, Chesnut Properties o A contract is still being negotiated OTHER BUSINESS 1. TASK FORCE MEMBERS’ COMMENTS • Griselda Delgado, Governing Board Member o The University Center should bring in business, education and move the bar of middle class higher o The University Center should make education accessible to our youth • Norma Hernandez, Governing Board Member o Southwestern College should touch base with regional players to make sure this University Center helps the economy and students • Lee Chesnut, Chesnut Properties o Companies that come to Chula Vista will need educated students to work for them, and the University Center will provide those educated employees ADJOURNMENT At 9:45 A.M., Mayor Mary Casillas Salas adjourned the meeting to the next meeting to be publicly announced in the Executive Conference Room, located at City of Chula Vista City Hall, 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, California. ____________________________________ Janelle Palermo, Executive Secretary
